The marauders sauntered down the hall on to their way to first period. For first thing in the morning, they were surprisingly bright.
Sirius gave a little wink and a wave to an unfortunate girl who stopped dead where she was standing. This was bad because they were in a busy corridor which caused some 6th years to fall over her, cursing. James punched him while Remus rolled his eyes.
It was the first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the year for them. The marauders were interested to see if the teacher was a vulnerable target or a no-nonsense person.
They got to class last. But not late.
There was a small crowd gathered in front of the door to the classroom. James barged his way in with his shoulder much to everyone's annoyance and grumbles. On the door was a note reading, 'DO NOT ENTER UNTIL TEACHER IS PRESENT'
Sirius came up behind James. "Hm? The new teacher doesn't seem like a pushover then." He mused. James nodded slowly. "Damn, DADA class isn't as fun without a few pranks."
"Well maybe for once we'll learn something then!" Remus sighed.
"Hmm? Oh so you decided to turn up then." Cyan tapped James on the shoulder and beamed at them. Once again, her hair was blond but it had managed to get leaves tangled in clumps that stuck out from her head.
Sirius shook his head. "Seriously, what do you do to your hair?"
"No one asked you." Cyan gave him daggers. She looked around James and at the notice. "I wonder what our teacher will be like. Is he strict?"
"Well, we get a new DADA teacher every year," Remus explained.
"DADA? Defence against the Dark Arts? Cool. Um why?"
"Why to what?"
"Why as in why there is a new teacher every year! Honestly Sirius, I'm not stupid."
Sirius gave Cyan a look.
"There are numerous reasons. But that doesn't matter, 'stop living in the past!'. That's my motto!"
"Really James, I thought your motto was, 'I love Lily!'. I mean you say it enough times."
"What? James you like Lily?" Cyan prodded a finger into Jame's chest.
"Duh. He's had a crush on her since, like, first year!"
"QUIET! I don't care who likes who, get into class now." Cyngi made a face then quickly turned on her heels while the marauders turned (not quite as slick) shell-shocked to face the new teacher.
They didn't like the look of him.
"Go." The word barely left his mouth and the marauders and Cyan had already scarpered.
The teacher looked heavily built and had a buzz cut making him look like a stereotypical army sergeant. A wand pointed threateningly out of his belt, a belt that made people's eyebrows go up at the look of it.
Most of the seats were already taken but Sirius and James managed to bribe some people to move. Bribe and potentially threat.
So with the marauders squished in together at the back corner of the DADA room, the teacher entered with arms firmly crossed across his chest.
Cyan was about to take the seat next to Remus but the teacher caught her and moved the now very pitiful girl to the front.
James let out an inside groan.
The teacher moved so he was standing directly in front of Lily and Alice Chambers. Alice looked up through her tangle of dark hair up at the teacher then back down again quickly. His eyes scanned the class before he nodded curtly and started walking briskly down the centre of the classroom.
