Chapter 6
Annie’s POV
When I wake up, I realise that I’m still in the cave on the beach. I smile to myself and then realise that I need to look for Finn.
I shake Finnick’s shoulder and he groans and sits up.
“What?” He asks.
“We need to go.” I say.
“What time is it?” He asks.
I shrug. “Don’t know. But the sun’s up.”
“I’m not.” Finnick says.
“You asked for it.” I say, punching his shoulder.
“Ouch!” He says, sitting upright.
I smile triumphantly.
“Did you ever consider taking up professional boxing?” He asks me.
“Don’t start.” I warn.
He holds up his hands in defence and I roll my eyes.
“Whatever. I’m going to get your sister. Meet us in the woods by the ribbon tree in half an hour.”
Finnick nods his head and mock-salutes.
“Yes sir!” He says.
The ribbon tree is a tree we always used to go to on January 1st as children with Holly. We’d each tie a ribbon on the tree as a sign of a new start.
I knock hesitantly on the door of Rue’s house and Rue answers, smiling.
“Hey Annie. Going somewhere?” She asks.
I nod. “To the woods. To look for my brother.”
She smiles. “One minute.” And disappears inside.
A few minutes later, she reappears with her backpack and coat.
I raise an eyebrow at her.
“If we’re going exploring we need to be prepared!”
I chuckle and she glares at me.
3rd Person’s POV
“You shouldn’t be exploring you know.” Rue tells Annie.
Annie nods. “I know but what my parents don’t know won’t hurt them!”
Rue gasps. “You haven’t told them?!”
Annie shakes her head. “No.”
“Annie! You’re missing the big picture! You’re going to have a baby in four months! And you haven’t told your parents yet!”
“And you didn’t even tell your mother! And in case you forgot, my baby’s ok! Yours is dead!”
“How can you say it like that?!” She shouts. “How can you say it like it’s nothing? Just something easily disposable?!”
“Because it is when it’s gone!”
“Annie I think you’re forgetting that that child was part of your brother too.”
“And I think you’re forgetting my child is part of your brother!”
“No I’m not forgetting that! But at least I’m not talking about my brother’s child like it’s an object instead of a person.”
“Well my brother’s child is dead.”
“And it was still a human being Annie!”
“It was barely a human being Rue and you know it!”
“Tell me you don’t care. Tell me that and we’re done.”
“Rue . . . I-”
“The way you spoke about it made me assume that so tell me you don’t care that my child is dead and we’ll be done. It’s all you have to do.”
“Rue I do care about your child it’s just-”
“No! You don’t care about my child! She’s dead and you couldn’t care less!”
You’re right Rue! I don’t care about your child because although she was a part of my brother, I don’t like who else she was a part of!”
“That’s it! We’re done. I never want to see you again. I’ll make sure my brother knows that.”
“And what difference does it make to your brother that you hate me?” Annie asks.
“Blood is thicker than anything Annie. And I’m his blood family. You’re his girlfriend. You’re a passing phase. I’m here for the long run.”

Oh dear! Why do they always have to fight?!
