Chapter 12

Annie’s POV

Finnick and Finn decide to stay in Mexico for a while. And Cassie is more than willing. I’m not stupid. I know she likes Finn. I just can’t help but feel bad. Finn was supposed to be with Rue and it’s my fault he isn’t. Finnick says he thinks Rue would be happy but I know better. She was my best friend and I know I need to make things right.

“Do have any name suggestions?” I ask randomly one afternoon.

Finnick and I are sitting in the living room as Cassie has taken Finn out to show him the pier.

Finnick shrugs. “I have some. But you’ll think they’re ridiculous. They’re not even relevant. At least not to you.”

“Tell me.” I say.

“I was thinking,” Finnick takes a deep breath. “For a girl, Katniss Jennifer. And for a boy, Michael.”

“Well the girl’s middle name is relevant to me. But who was Michael?” I ask.

“He was . . . he was my grandfather.” Finnick says.

“But Katniss’ father was John and Gale’s father was Richard.”

Finnick nods.

“But that means he’s P-Peeta’s father!”

Finnick nods. “I just thought. I told you you’d think they were ridiculous.”

“I don’t think they’re ridiculous. I’m just surprised.” I say.

Finnick nods. “I just thought-”

Finnick is interrupted by the sound of the mailbox.

“I’ll be right back.” I say.

I walk into the passageway and pick up the single letter. It’s addressed to me.

“What is it?” Finnick asks.

I shrug and open the envelope. I pull out the letter and begin to read.

Annie,

It gives me great sadness to write this letter. Not just for me, but for your father too. I hope Finnick and Finn found you and I’m writing to let you know that your grandmother has sadly passed away. Her funeral will be in two week on June 15th and I am hoping you, Finn and Finnick will make the journey home.

Your father is sorry for everything that happened and he blames himself for everything. He didn’t mean anything he said. He was just angry.

Please let me know if you will be coming home. I know it would mean a lot to your father if you and your brother were there.

Love Always,

Mum

I finish reading and set the letter down, tears flowing freely down my cheeks.

“What happened?” Finnick asks.

“Grandma. She . . . she’s dead.” I whisper.

Finnick sits beside me and wraps his arms around me.

It takes me back to a day in the cave. The two of us were only around fourteen at the time.

*Flashback*

“That one.” Finnick says, pointing to one of the stars we can see through the opening to the cave.

“What about it?” I ask.

“Well isn’t it beautiful?” He asks.

I nod in agreement. “It is very beautiful.”

“It’s almost as beautiful as you.” Finnick says, kissing my cheek.

I smile.

“You know what? I realised something today. Something amazing.” Finnick whispers.

“What was that?” I ask.

“I realised that I love you.” He says.

I smile.

“I love you too.” I say.

*End of Flashback*

That is one of the fondest memories I have of my teenage years.

When Finn returns home, he sees me and his face immediately falls.

“What happened?” He asks.

“Grandma Annie passed away.” I tell him.

His face falls and tears well in his eyes.

He hugs me tightly and I bury my face in his shoulder.

“I’m sorry Ann. I know how much she meant to you. And I know how much you wanted the baby to know her.”

I nod. “Never mind. We have to leave anyway. The funeral is June 15th.”

Finn nods. “I’ll book the train home in the morning.”
