The sky in New York was as clear as it could be, despite the usual pollution. Tall buildings and skyscrapers contrasted with the blue color, drawing one's attention upwards. Staring up too long made Natasha dizzy as she walked along the crowded sidewalks As she was looking up she would bump into multiple people, usually ending up with someone yelling at her and telling her she was a stupid child or something along those lines.
Turning her attention back to the ground, she rounded another corner. She was quite good at evading the cops, but she knew if she was caught, she would be in serious trouble. School started just a day before, and even though she wasn't in any schools, she knew a cop would think she was sluffing classes.
Just as she thought she had gotten away from the last officer, she rounded another corner and saw another cop a few yards ahead. Her body reacted before her brain, running away into an alley and ducking behind a trash can. But it was too late; the officer had seen her.
He walked down the alley and approached the fifteen year old girl, sighing when her saw her crouched behind a trash can.
"You should be in school, young lady," the officer said, clicking his tongue.
Natasha sat there for a second, staring up at the officer while thinking of something to say to get out of him trying to take her to a school.
"I'm graduated," she lied, cursing herself internally for not being able to think of something better. She knew she didn't look old enough to make him believe her.
The officer sighed again, clicking his tongue even louder. "If there's anything in the world that I'm good at, it's knowing when someone is lying. And you, young lady, are lying."
She sighed, looking up at him with an irritated look on her face. "Well, how is that your problem?" she asked, her eyebrows raised and her lips pursed.
"Come with me, young lady," he said, still staring down at her.
After a moments hesitation, she finally stood up, not wanting to be in trouble with the law. She knew she probably wouldn't be arrested this time, but if they somehow found out about her past, that was a different story.
Once she had brushed her jeans off, she followed the cop to his car. It was a typical police car, and in really nice condition. When they reached the car, he held the door open for her to slide in, which she did without complaining.
'I swear, if he takes me to some school, I'm gonna rip his head off,' she thought to herself. If she was completely honest, she was scared of somehow getting stuck in school. She didn't know anything about an actual school. On top of that, she had never even been inside a school building and the idea of how big they were intimidated her.
If she did somehow end up in school, she had no family she could contact. The only person she could call family was Fury, but even he had no time for her. So, she was in this for herself. If there was anything good that came from the Red Room, it was how to fend for herself.
Natasha shuddered as thoughts of the Red Room entered her mind. She quickly shook them out, turning her head towards the window to clear the thought out. Soon enough, the police officer left New York City and entered Brooklyn.
Natasha's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Why would he take her to Brooklyn? When he rounded another corner, a school building came into view. Based off of the gated outside and classy looking building, she guessed it was a private school. But why would her take her to a private school she wasn't even enrolled in? There wasn't any way that they would let some random, unregistered girl into a prestigious school like this, so what was he thinking?
As he got closer to the building, Natasha examined it further. It was at least three stories high and had windows everywhere. Inside the windows, you could see teachers and students at their desks, a few students staring off dreamily out the windows, while others had blank expressions like zombies as they dozed in and out of consciousness.
At the front of the building was two double doors, a 'WB' intertwined on each door. A sign with the same letters stood next the the gate that surrounded the building. Underneath the 'WB' it said: 'Brooklyn New York's West Bridge Private Academy' indicating the school's whole name.
The officer drove up to the front gate and entered a PIN into the PIN pad. Once it registered the PIN, he continued on into the parking lot where none other than the famous Nick Fury stood. Once the car was completely stopped, Natasha stepped out and walked towards Fury.
"Miss Romanoff," he greeted, slightly inclining his head forwards. "I've sent this undercover agent to retrieve you. I've decided that, for your own good, and for mine, that you will be starting school this year."
Natasha opened her mouth to protest, but Fury held his hand up to stop her.
"You know your basic math," Fury continued once he was sure she wouldn't interrupt, "and you can read. So, I think you'll do good in your grade that you're supposed to be in."
"I don't need to be in school, Fury. This is all pointless!" she exclaimed, sighing and rolling her eyes.
Raising and eyebrow at her tone, her regarded her with his one good eye. "You know the consequences if you don't listen."
Natasha signed again, turning to watch the undercover agent leave in the car.
"I got you an apartment nearby the school. You don't have to worry about rent or anything because I'll be paying it off. But it's close enough that you can walk to and from school each day. Here's the key," he said, grabbing something from his coat pocket and handing it to her.
Natasha looked down at the key in her hand. Fury could tell she was clearly irritated, but to be quite frank, he didn't care. All that mattered was that he was doing the right thing for her and this was his way of showing that he cared for her, even though she didn't realize it.
After a brief silence, he cleared his throat. "Now, if you'll follow me, I'll take you to your apartment."
Natasha nodded, following him back down to the entrance. After teaching her the pin, they continued onward. They walked for awhile until they arrived at the apartment buildings, and even though she was in a bad mood, she had to admit that they were good looking. They got in the building and up the elevator. Fury took her to her room and showed her how to unlock it, leaving her alone once he was sure she was safe.
Natasha took a deep breath before entering the room. This wasn't her first time living alone, but this time felt weird. She glanced around the room once she entered, and was surprised to see that it was even nicer than the outside made it look. It was already furnished, with a good sized living room with a sofa and a TV. To the right of the living room was a small kitchen. To the left was a hallway with two doors. The first door led to her bathroom and the second contained her bedroom.
Once she had finished looking around, she sat down on the couch when a paper caught her eye. Picking it up, she noticed that it had a list of classes she would be attending. Luckily for her, she was only two days late for school, so she would be able to catch up easily. After looking over it a few time, she stretched out on the couch and slowly drifted off to sleep. As she fell asleep, thoughts and worries about school filled her mind and dreams.
