I woke up to the smell of sausage and eggs, giving me the urge to throw up. I hate breakfast food, I always have. Back when I was moving weight, I never had time for breakfast anyway because I was either sleep or out making moves.
I slept in a nightgown again and of course I didn't want to make it more awkward than what it will already be, since I was being a peeping Tom. So I snuck in his room and grabbed a t-shirt and a pair of his boxers. His clothes smelled like cinnamon and felt like rose petals against my skin.
I pulled my hair into a bun on top of my head and went downstairs to the kitchen. Malachi had put I'm assuming is the last pancake on a plate and set it on the table. He turned to me and smiled.
"Good morning sleepy head. I thought you would never wake up. I wanted to go for a run."
"Sorry, I stayed up kind of late, so I guess I woke up late because of that."
He grabbed a spoon and a bowl of something off the table and walked over to me. He took a spoonful then held it to my mouth.
"Taste this."
"I'm not really a-"
"Taste it" he said more firmly.
I opened my mouth and he fed me what I now know is oatmeal. Only this didn't taste like any oatmeal I've ever had. It tasted like it was a mixture of strawberries and bananas in it with a slight crunch of walnuts.
"Do you like it?"
"It's amazing. Did you make it yourself?"
"Yes, I make everything from scratch."
"Who taught you how to cook?"
"My mother, of course."
"Do you miss her?"
"Every second of every day. But she was very sick, so I'm well with it."
"What about the woman you were with?"
I had been itching to ask about Bri since I saw that picture. A part of me is frightened at the thought of Malachi having anything to do with her trying to kill me. But the other part of me can't bring myself to even act on the fact that he would do that to me. I mean honestly, if he wanted to kill me why hasn't he done so already? But then again I had the same question for everything else that has happened.
"I miss the thought of what we could have been. Situations change people and people grow apart. It happens."
"I was being nosey and-"
"Just like you were being nosey last night?"
I cleared my throat and ignored the fact that he said that.
"And I saw a baby's room."
His face got a little pale, surprisingly, and he put the bowl down. I must've hit a nerve.
"She was pregnant but she lost the baby. I think that's when everything started spiraling out of control."
"So why do you still have the room?"
"I just never got around to changing it. I do still want kids, so might as well keep it, right?"
Before I could answer, my phone started buzzing from a text message. I rolled my eyes when I realized it was from my father.
"Ex-boyfriend?"
"What? No, it's my dad."
"What's going on?"
"My step mom is having a little backyard function, and it is mandatory for us to be there."
"We should be getting dressed then right?"
