Steve’s POV
My eyes blinked open as I heard a high pitched beeping noise. Groggily, I blinked a few more times then shifted so that I could stop the alarm. I sat up, my legs handing off the edge of the bed while I regained my senses. Running my hands through my hair, in an attempt to wake myself up, I glanced at my clock and saw the time: 6: 01. Immediately I realized that I was supposed to get breakfast with the SHIELD agent, Bre.
Standing up, I walked into the bathroom and quickly showered, getting dressed in my uniform, as they were the only clothes that I had, before doing my hair. By 6:57 I was walking to Bre’s room.
I knocked on the door and waited nervously. Bre’s powers were astounding yet still…strange. Never had I seen someone that could do something like that. It was difficult not to feel surprised, and slightly wary of her.
Shuffling was heard behind the door. “Who is it?” A voice, Breann, called through the door.
“It’s Steve.” I called back.
“Sorry Steve, Hang on, I’m almost ready, just give me one more minute.”
I nodded to no one in particular and stood out the door waiting. Soon after, Breann cam out of the door, “I’m sorry.” She apologized. She was wearing her SHIELD uniform and her long blonde hair was straight down her back. A smile was on her face when I saw that it didn’t meet her eyes.
My eyes scrunched up in confusion as I continued to notice small things about her. Her eyes were slightly red, making it look like she had been crying. “Are you alright?” I asked, my voice concerned.
She bit her lip and nodded, tucking her hair behind her ear before responding. “I just had a hard night.”
Just from hearing that sentence, I knew it was a sore subject so I didn’t press her farther. “So, do you want to get breakfast?” I asked and her stomach made a loud sound in response. She blushed while we laughed. “I guess that would be a yes?” I said and held out my arm indicating she should go first. She laughed and we walked towards the kitchen.
Getting to know her wasn’t as hard as I thought. I learned that she had become a SHIELD agent when she was 18, she was adopted, her adopted parents were dead (I also avoided that, knowing that was also a sore subject), she had found out about her powers when she was 12, she was a highly advanced agent, she loved to go to the beach, reading was a hobby of hers, and lots of small other things about her. The more I got to know about her, the less I felt wary of her. At first the conversation had started out tense but soon we were acting as though we were friends that had known each other for a long time.
It was strange to feel that way. Bucky and I had always been friends. Only us two. Honestly I had never even talked to a girl this long but she made things easy.
Bre liked to joke around a lot and I found myself laughing at what she had done, even though I never would have done it before. Once Bre made Tony drop his coffee five times before we both cracked up laughing! I never really liked Mr. Stark but he was a good sport about it. When he dropped it for the fifth time he looked around widely and started screaming at whoever was doing this to him to stop, we just cracked up even more from his face.
Honestly, it was really nice to be able to talk to someone and act normal. I was shy, I knew that but Bre was easy to talk to, unlike everyone else her. I expected her to be like Agent Romanoff, more cut off from everyone but she was friendly and really kind. Unlike most people here, I felt comfortable around her. My self-conscious was low with this century as I didn’t know what half of anything here did. Most people laughed when I made a mistake and she just smiled and politely corrected me.
When we finally arrived at her door I wanted to do something else her to get her mind of whatever upset her last night. “Do you want to train with me later?” I asked and suddenly my cheeks flared up as I realized that sounded like asking her on a date. Breann was a beautiful woman, and very kind and sweet but.. I don’t know if she would even want to think of something like that so I explained. “Usually when I have a hard night it helps when I train with someone.”
Her smile immediately relaxed me as she looked grateful for the invitation. “That would really help. Thanks. What time would you want to train?”
I glanced at my watch: 8:23. “About 9 or 10?” I offered.
She thought for a minute and rose an eyebrow challenging. “9:30.” She said and I smiled, nodding.
“I’ll see you later then.” I said and gave her a small friendly hug on instinct as it was something that I would have done to Bucky, only it was too late to go back so I hugged her than pulled away, smiling almost apologetically.
“Bye, Steve, I had a really good time.”
“I did too. Bye ma’am.” I said teasing her as she had told me multiple times not to call her that but she laughed and rolled her eyes.
When I turned away, I was smiling like a lunatic and I quickly shook my head, trying to stop smiling. It wasn’t like it was that funny but something about her made my cheeks burn. I bit my lip and quickly walked back to my room to catch up on this century’s technology so I wouldn’t seem as clueless.
