Loki’s POV

I stared at her while she slept, my thoughts both confused, angry, yet overjoyed all at once.

The woman was beautiful; it was hard for me to believe that she was a mortal. Her beautiful hair, her face, her shape, her eyes- oh her eyes!

When I first stared at her I looked into her unnatural eyes with surprise. One second they were one color then the next they were another. I felt, strangely, compelled to her. She was different. There was something about her. Also when we touched I felt an odd feeling come over me like sparks that went up my arm.

I remembered a conversation Mother and I had when I had not known about my true parentage.

Flashback

We were walking down the hall, Mother’s arm in the crook of mine. It was silent like it always was when we left from our session of magic during the afternoons. Our footsteps echoed across the long, empty hall while we walked.

“Loki?” Mother asked, looking kindly at me.

“Yes Mother? I asked, glancing at her.

“Have you ever heard of a soul mate?” She asked, innocently.

I paused in my step and looked at her, a questioning look in my eyes while one of my eyebrows was raised. “Yes Mother, but they are hardly even possible. Many Asgardians do not have soul mates. Not even you or Father are soul mates, it is a very rare occurrence. Why would you ask such a thing?”

Mother gave me a sly smile then took her arm back in mine. “Nothing my son,” She tried to hide her smile from her face, which only wanting me to know ever more.

        “Mother,” I pressed.

She laughed slightly, knowing I would eventually get the information that I desired. “I was curious if you knew about them.” She responded.

“You told Thor and I long ago, Mother.” I reminded.

“How much do you know, son?”

I thought for a moment; it had been so long. “A soul mate has a life that is connected, intertwined with yours.” I recalled. “Sometimes a soul mate can be a friend, a lover, sometimes a sibling. They are bound for life and love each other dearly. You feel a sense of calm and you are drawn to them. There are also physical occurrences like a small shock when you touch or possibly a quiver as well as other things.” I finished nodding, pleased with my memory. Another look came upon Mother’s face, simpler to when she asked me before. “Why do you ask, Mother?         Why the sudden interest in soul mates?”

She turned her head to me and smiled. “Nothing, I was simply… reading… something about soul mates this morning and wanted to know what knowledge you had of them.” I nodded slowly and pressed my lips together knowing she was not giving the full truth, I was after all- the God of Lies and Mischief.  And Mother was doing both of those things: lying and being mischievous.

We continued to walk in silence and I thought the conversation was over until Mother asked, “If you ever had a soul mate would you treat her kindly?” She turned to me, her eyes shining in a pleading way.

“Mother,” I stopped and took her hands ready to end this strange conversation with soul mates. “Asgardians do not have soul mates often. The last Asgardians to have a soul mate was centuries ago. They do not happen anymore, and I am fairly sure that if it did happen, it would not be with me.”
