"He can't do this Sasha, it isn't fair!" Marina cried to her best friend, Sasha, in rage and frustration, her hands gripping her raven black hair as she paced her bedroom floor.
They had just gotten back from a dinner with the Atlantic Kingdom's King and his son, Kane, and it didn't go well at all. "There has to be something...anything to stop this." Her voice came out desperate for a solution as if the idea would come if she wished it hard enough. She sunk to the ground her hands running over the black carpet. Sasha joined her rubbing up against Marina's arms, a common habit that Sasha did when her princess was stressed. "I mean they don't actually expect me to marry him do they?" She huffed.
I'm sorry Marina. You're of age and if your father thinks an arrange marriage will solve the kingdom's current threats from our enemies there is nothing your mother nor I can do about it. Lady Elena tried reasoning with your father to give you more time but he wouldn't budge. His decision is fina-. Sasha told her, sadness showing in her tone.
"Final my ass! He has no right to decide who I am to marry..." Marina screamed to the top of her voice hoping that the whole kingdom heard her including her father. Sasha cringed at her harsh tone but chose to ignore it. Marina lifted her head and saw her reflection in the mirror. She had tears streaming down from her puffy red eyes and her hair stuck in every direction. I look like a hot mess.
Marina please you have to understand that your father is only doing what is best for the kingdom. Sasha said in Marina's mind, a power that only protectors had with their masters, trying to make Marina see why her father was being so cruel.
"Well what about me huh? Does he not realize I have a say in this as well?" She retorted turning, to face away from the white panther that was sitting in front of her. "No he doesn't even consider it. Uh! I wish Leo had been born first then he would be the one stuck with a whole kingdom to take care of and an arranged marriage to egotistical douchebag prince." She wiped her tears away laughing at how this would only happen to her because the ocean goddess hates me.
Oh and the fact that I am the first born daughter of Nathaniel Quentin. King of the Mer-People in the Pacific Ocean. She snorted at the fate of it all.
Now Marina....Prince Kane doesn't seem so bad you've only just met him. Give him a chance. Like you gave Zain a chance. Sasha explained.
How dare you even say his name! You have always been there for me through thick and thin and now you're suddenly taking my fathers side?! And you saw Kane shoving his tongue down that maids throat just now does that seem like a 'good' guy to marry? She thought loudly so that Sasha would hear her loud and clear.
"Whatever Sasha...I refuse to marry a guy I do not love." Marina said aloud not even giving her a second to speak, standing up and walking to her cobblestone balcony that over looked to city at the bottom of the sea. It was a beautiful sight to see with all the bright pastel colors from the luminescent coral that they used because they had no way of getting electricity like humans, but Marina often found herself looking up to where she knew the humans settled. Wondering what it would be like to live with them... to be like them. Not having a care in the world, having real friends to talk to, to laugh with, date who you wanted to date, and fall in love with no complications...now that would be the life. Suddenly an idea strikes her and a smirk makes an appearance on my her face.
Oh no I know that face. What are you thinking about doing Marina? Sasha asks recognizing Marina's "best plan ever to rebel against her father" face.
"Let's go for a swim Sasha. I need to take my mind off things for a...while." Marina says slipping on her sandals in a rush, strapping her guitar to her back, hooking her grandmothers dark green amulet around her slender neck, the sword she has been training with since she was able to walk and her song book/diary and made her way to the bedroom door when she had everything she needed for her rather long journey to the surface.
Wait! Sasha exclaimed. Marina turn around to see she had changed into a majestic white wolf.
If we're only going for a swim why do you need all that stuff especially the guitar you couldn't play that unless......wait a minute hold on ..Marina please tell me you don't plan on running away! To the human world of all places? Sire Nathaniel will not be happy when he hears about this! You could get killed. I could get killed. Somebody could kidnap you, use you for ransom and what about your mother? She would be heartbroken when she find out you left. Have you lost your mind child! she rambled on and on.
Marina just rolled her eyes Sasha was always the dramatic type. "Not if we leave before father finds out and swim to the surface fast without being seen. And I'll send my mom a message as soon as we get there OK? This is the only chance to be free Sasha they're in a meeting now. This is a golden opportunity to just go. Now hurry switch to something unnoticeable and lets go." Marina rushed out leaving, not waiting for her to follow, using her water powers to go invisible and made her way through the halls and stairs without being notice, Sasha following close behind. They traveled all the way to the outskirts of the city in record time.
The wall that separated the city from the ocean was made purposely for mermaids to travel in and out of at anytime without the whole thing bursting and was made out of a glass-like material (that captures sunlight and shines in directly on the city) the outside it was kind of like an underwater camouflage so that the humans never find the place. This is it. Marina thought a she looked up at the almost intimidating wall. I can finally be free and start a new life.
"You ready Sasha?" She asked smiling from new excitement.
I'm not sure about this. Sasha states looking around as if someone was going to pop out of no where and scream "Hey where do you think you're going!"
"Oh calm down. We will be fine a soon as we hit the beach and get to a crowded place like that place....Los Angeles I think it was. I promise we will be fine." Marina said briskly, strapping the sword and guitar to her back it was slightly uncomfortable for her but she was going to have to deal with it. She striped down to nothing and started to push through the thick barrier. It was much like moving through quick sand and it almost seemed to pull Marina and Sasha back as if forbidding them to leave. But soon enough she was in the clear ocean. The second her skin made contact with the heavy saltwater her body morphed, adapted into her true form. Her skin turned from tan to a pale blue-green scales, her legs molded into one as she sprouted a tail and her fingers webbed together. Marina felt free and that's what she longed for, something she knew she could have on the surface. With her now fish-like eyes she was able to see every detail of the ocean. Like how the colors seem to change if you looked to long and the coral reefs that blanketed most of the ground with all different types that swam past her like they normally did when she came here. She searched around for Sasha and just above her was a great white shark knowing immediately it was Sasha she didn't panic.
Let's do this. She said through their special mind link and they speed off to what the humans called 'Malibu Beach'.
