Marika

I LAY IN the wonderland room bed, listening to Megan and Sam's little-kid conversation.
"Watch, Sam, Captain's gonna blow this base up in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1—"
"—His name's Bear!" Sam corrects, interrupting Megan's countdown.
"He's mine now, Sam, Captain belongs to me!" Megan shoots back.
Before Sam can say anything else, I hear Ben's footsteps. How do I know this? One step is normal. The other step is light. Left leg, normal. Right leg, light; He's still limping.
I wait for him to appear in the doorway, cute face scrunched up.
"He's . . . He's . . ."
"What?"
Ben gulps. "Evan Walker's alive."
Immediately I start to get up, but fall. "Help me up."
"No, Marika."
"I need to see."
"No, you need to rest."
"You can't handle him yourself."
"Yes I can."
"I'm enhanced. You're not."
"So? You've got a broken back."
"You've got an injured leg."
"You can't walk."
"I can try."
"Shit, Marika I can never win, can I?'
"Win what?"
He sighs. Picks me up. Grunts. Carries me a few doors down. To the door where I saw Cassie exit from before shooting my creator in the back of the head.
I stare inside, thinking.
"What do we do?" Ben asks.
I look around the room.
"Do you think there's something we can use to get rid of the water, or the electrical wire?" He suggests.
"I'm not sure." I say. I'm really not sure.
"God dammit, Cassie! Why did you have to make this so damn hard?" Ben whines facing the sky. Why the sky?
Think. Think. Think, Marika.
"We could leave him until the water dries?"
"Shh . . ." I say.
"Marika . . ."
"That's actually an idea, Zombie. If we can stay here a few days, or however long it takes for the water to dry. Then, we can grab Evan Walker, and get the hell out of here before this baby goes all labour on me." I say.
"Food and water, Marika." He reminds me.
"I'll go and get the power back on, we'll have clean, running water and there's a kitchen in this base, somewhere."
"I'll go. You stay and care for them." He says, pointing down the hall.
"No. You are the best parent out of both of us." I say, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"If Evan wakes while I'm gone, haul ass to the caverns. Shoot him if he comes near you. He's fast. So are you. Run as fast as you can away from here. I'll deal with him and find you." I say.
Even though he's the sergeant, I still boss him around. And, surprisingly, he listens.
He nods, kisses me on the cheek, and leaves me.
Before I leave to turn the power back on, I step next to Evan Walker's body, hand in front of his mouth.
Breath.
