"So that's it, huh?"
Dom nodded. He had just finished explaining to Aly how everything worked; Essence, the Reaper, pretty much everything. Everyone else was resting around a makeshift campsite in the middle of the day, which was perfectly understandable. Kyo had collapsed, Olivia had cried herself to sleep, etc. Pretty much, Dom had been free to catch Aly up with all that she'd missed without interruption. It had been pretty easy, since Aly listened well and seemed to comprehend it easily.
"So, if I wanted to, I could summon a scythe and transform my clothes?" Aly asked excitedly.
He laughed, "Is that an anime reference?"
She looked down sheepishly, "Kind of..."
"Theoretically, yes, you would be able to do that, but would be pretty difficult. It would take considerable concentration in order to turn thin air into a scythe, not to mention transforming the matter of your clothing. Actually, I think your clothes are fine the way they are."
Aly examined them herself, looking over the fingerless gloves, the tight-fitting black shirt, and the equally tight leggings. All in all, she looked like she was ready to run in a triathlon or something. By the looks of her, she was only eleven, but the outfit made her look a couple years older.
Something came to him. A memory of a conversation he had with someone else a while ago, "You know, you remind me a lot of how Ryan was when I had to teach him about this stuff."
Looking up at him, Aly seemed confused, "Really?"
"Yeah, I mean, we all have a point where we need to learn from someone, right?"
"Oh, I guess you're right." She paused for a while, but again asked Dom a question, "Does Ryan ever talk about me?"
He thought about it a while. He hadn't had a lot of casual conversations with the twins outside of teaching them, since he had been so focused on learning about the Reaper. But in the few times he had talked to Ryan, perhaps Dom could remember something, "I recall him mentioning you a few times, but he never really went into much detail. I don't really know, though, since I kind of talked to him as little as I could."
Aly seemed disappointed, "I see."
Dom immediately felt like he had to cheer her up, "Don't worry, Olivia talks to him all the time. Once she feels better, you could ask her."
She pulled her knees up to her chin, "Yeah, Olivia talks to him all the time."
"What do you mean by that?"
Aly rolled her eyes, "Well, you just skipped right over his twin sister, and went straight to the friend he's made while he's here."
Dom tried to laugh to keep the mood light, "To be fair, Therin kind of scares me with all that fire."
She smiled at his attempt, but turned to the fire that was at the center of the camp. A thought struck her and she brought up a new subject. Dom had noticed that she was good at that, like her mind went in several directions at once, "So you can control Essence, which can control everything else, right?"
"Right."
"And each of you has an element that's easiest to control, right?"
"Right."
Aly smiled, like she'd come up with something revolutionary, "And what are those elements?"
Dom blinked. He certainly wasn't expecting that question, "Well, Therin likes fire, I'm comfortable with wind, Ryan uses earth, Sira uses..." He trailed off, suddenly realizing what was so funny.
