Sorry for the long wait. Senior year for me is getting me stressed out.

Narrator's POV

Everyone was in the lounging room except for Allura and Coran, who decided to help the prisoners get medical attention. Kai sat on the couch with Nakali's head on his lap as she laid on the couch unconscious. He was petting her hair as a sort of comfort to himself, to help him relax in a way. All the paladins were there with him with sorrow looks on their faces.

"Poor Nakali, she already feels bad about you guys getting captured. Imagine how she's gonna be when she wakes up." Pidge said sadly.

"She shouldn't blame herself for that. She only tried to do what was right the day we got capture. Our rebel organization had been trying to figure what the empire was doing and Nakali had figured it out, but alas, the information never reached our base." Kai explained. He looked down at Nakali's sleeping body and frowned. "If only I could have done something to prevent the witch from attacking my aunt, then maybe, she would still be here." He said.

"Wait, she was your aunt?"

"By blood, no. But her and my mom are best friends and Nakali and I grew up together so we're basically like family to each other. She calls my parents her aunt and uncle and I do the same with her parents." He takes a big breath and let's it out. "What am I going to tell my uncle? That I couldn't protect his wife because I'm a pathetic excuse of a soldier? That I let her die because instead of defending her since I couldn't get out of my restraints, the best fucking thing I could do was try to calm her down when she only had the reasonable reaction to her daughter's announced death... What the hell am I gonna do?" He looked down towards the ground, covering his eyes with his unoccupied hand and closing his eyes shut to prevent them from tearing up.

"Hey man, don't beat yourself up about it. You tried to do what you thought was the best course of action in your position." Lance attempted to comfort Kai with his words, but Kai couldn't find comfort in those word with the guilt he had placed on himself.

"You can say that, um, Lance? but I feel like I could've done more to save her." Kai said as he tried to remember the blue paladin's name. Lance nodded.

"Kai, don't put the guilt on yourself. The galra has a big part in this. They are the ones to blame for what happened." Pidge tried to reassure him. Kai just felt guilt run throughout his body.

"Hmm..." Nakali began to groan as she was starting to wake up. Everyone was anxious to see what will happen when Nakali remembers the news of her mother. She opened her eyes only to see Kai looking down at her. He gave her a weak and sad smile, "Hey sleepy head... How are your feeling?" He asked, even though he knew completely how she felt.

"My head hurts a bit. What happened?" She sat up, but immediately after, realization struck her. She remembered what had happened before she lost consciousness. She looks at Kai with pure horror on her face. "Kai?" Her voice trembling.

"Nakali... I'm so sorry" He apologized once again. That's when Nakali lost it. Salty tears began to run down her face from her visible eye. Her body trembling from the news.

"No... No, it can't be." She said. All Kai did was open his arm for her and she immediately took the hug he was offering. She buried her face in his chest, muffled sobs coming from her. Kai could feel the tears wetting his shirt, but he could care less at the moment. He combed his finger through her short raven black hair. The paladins looked at the scene before them, and what they saw broke their hearts. They saw a girl who's heart has just been shattered with the news of person she held so dear to her. Heart-rending was the only way to describe this.
