꙳MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 2000꙳ (JILLIAN﴿
Jillian finally made it to Bum-fuck-Egypt.... better known as Olly, Louisiana, population of thirteen thousand two hundred and three.
The only thing that continuously raced around in her brain was, "What in the hell is Uncle Vince thinking? Why would he send me to such a godforsaken place? Surely, this must be some kind of sick joke?"
The last time he sent her to a similar site, she nearly fired the whole crew. They were a bunch of racist ass-nuggets who had the ridiculous belief that if they ignored her and pushed back against her every request she would tuck her tail and run. After she held a staff meeting to allow them to openly voice their concerns without fear of reprisal, Jillian explained to every one of them that she was a fair boss. She understood how it might be difficult to accept that a stranger walked in and took over an already established crew. Then she impressed upon them the sobering truth.
"If for any reason, I cannot get this site up to speed, you will all find yourselves in the unemployment line the day after I submit my final report."
Her words shut down all bickering as they registered that she meant business.
"My uncle never sends me to a place if it isn't already in trouble. I am specially trained to build up and rehabilitate locations that are on the brink of ruin."
Once again, bulging eyes met her every move as she paced back and forward laying out the facts to the crew.
Two months after that meeting was concluded, Jillian placed a call to her uncle to discuss her progress and he promised she was officially done with her corporate training since she was able to get that branch up and running smoothly. Again, she recalled that he had distinctly stated she wouldn't be called on for an assignment like that again. Soon after she had completed her work at the last training site, he insisted that she relocate from the San Antonio, Texas branch to the corporate facility in Dallas.
Assured that she was no longer required to move around like a nomad, Jillian was glad to finally be back in the city she loved.
At least, she was happy for a little while.
Driving through the tiny town reminded her of the exact reasons why she hated the country.
First, her GPS decided to keep routing her in the wrong direction. Second, her day was made unnecessarily hectic because of the dumbass GPS, and finally, she was scheduled to take a conference call with her uncle and he despised tardiness, and it was just her luck that she most likely would be late.
Since the majority of the town's nearly twenty-mile radius was mostly farmland and gravel roads, she had no control over her ability to connect to the internet or cellphone tower to figure out where to go or place a call.
When she was finally able to connect to a better reception, Jillian realized just how small the town was. At the risk of sounding stuck-up, their corporate office was bigger than the tiny city that was surrounded by far too many trees.
She whined to herself fully aware that it would do no good to try and convince the pig-headed man to let her go home. He didn't care if she got lost by making a wrong turn at a dead end. It was evident that Uncle Vince wouldn't budge when he said she was needed and not to disobey him.
With that warning in mind, she flew well over the speed limit when her phone finally connected to a cell tower.
A space near the front was available so she cruised through the parking lot until she came to a stop in it. Glancing at her phone, she saw that it was time to start her day. She didn't have time to speak to those who were hanging around as she rushed into the building. A conference call with her uncle was expected to take place in exactly five minutes. She was forced to rush by the crew and get to the office phone or face his wrath for being late.
