Chapter 12

I am helped out the carriage by Ben to see his parents. "About the other day...I just-"
"I told Ben this wasn't going to be easy." He tells me contently. "You also taught me that a king has to believe in himself. Even when it isn't easy." Ben remarks leaving me with a small smile. "I did? I... how very wise of me." His father jokes. I laugh and look down. "Ben, we are very proud of you. You keep listening to your heart." His mother says. "Thanks, mom." "You look very nice Bl-" Bens mom starts.
"Actually, it's Haley now." I interrupt. "I love it." She smiles.
"You're gonna make a fine king." His dad says before walking off with Belle.  "Wish me luck." Ben says as he kisses my cheek and walks towards the doors.
Ben makes glances my direction before I'm led through the side to be placed next to the wand. I look up to see Mal, Carlos, Jay, and Evie looking down from a balcony. I get anxious at the thought of ruining Bens ceremony. The sound or trumpets roars through the church and I turn to see Ben walking with his parents towards his crown and the fairy god mother. He parts from his parents and walks to Fairy Godmother and kneels down slightly. "Do you solemnly swear to govern the peoples of Auradon with justice and mercy as long as you shall reign?" She says. "I do solemnly swear."  I have to grab. I can't let my friends down. Hook might hurt me if I don't. "Then it is my honor and my joy to bless our new king-" someone else grabs the wand blasting a beam up and out of the church causing everyone to duck. I look up to see my friends rush down and I look down to see it's Jane who grabbed for the wand. "Child, what are you doing?!" Fairy Godmother questions her child. "If you won't make me beautiful, I'll do it myself!" She struggles with the wand. She doesn't hold any magic within her for the wand to agree. "Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!" The wand just shoots sparks and beams into the air. "Take cover!" Everyone ducks but I grab for the wand and the sparks and beams stop. "Careful, Haley." Belle tells me. "Haley, give me the wand." Ben says. "Stand back!" I shout. "It's okay." He says calmly. I tear up at the sound. I didn't deserve to be spoken to calmly. "Ben, I said stand back!" My voice cracks. "I told you so!" Audrey interrupts but one look from me made her hide with her grandma. "Let's go!" I hear Carlos behind me. Jay then says. "Revenge time." I look down and not show anyone my tears slowly falling. "You really want to do this?" Ben says. "We have no choice, Ben! Our parents-"
"Your parents made their choice! Now you make yours." Ben says. I look up and the sight of my tears makes him hurt. I can see his hurt.
"I think I want to be good." I say my voice cracking. "You are good." He says. "But how do you know that?! How do you know I'm not evil and terrible. I'm now what I was raised to be?!"
"Because... Because I'm listening to my heart." He says. I shake my head, "I want to listen to my heart, too." I turn to my friends to see them hurt. "And my heart is telling me that we are not our parents. I mean, stealing things doesn't make you happy. Tourney and victory pizza with the team makes you happy." I tell Jay. "And you, scratching dude's belly makes you happy. Who would've thought?" I laugh while telling Carlos. "And Evie... You do not have to play dumb to get a guy. You are so smart." She smiles. "And Mal, you can try to control all you want but you know this is what you want. You don't want to be controlled. You want control on your life. Which you've done while away from your mother." She looks away. "And I don't want to take over the world with evil. It doesn't make me happy. I want to go to school. And be with Ben." I turn to Ben and raise my hand with his ring. "Because Ben makes me really happy. Us being friends makes me really happy. Not destroying things. I choose good, you guys." I place my hand in the middle of my circle of friends. "I choose good, too." Jay says placing his hand in. "I choose good." Ever follows. "So, just to be clear, we don't have to be worried about how really mad our parents will be? Because they're gonna be really, really mad." We all laugh. "Your parents can't reach you here." Ben says. "Okay then. Good." Carlos follows the same. "Mal?" I ask. But then a thud echos the halls and we see Maleficent appear. "I'm back!" She hollers. "It can't be." Ben lets out. "Go away Maleficent." I say. "She's funny. Oh! I'm so... you're very funny. Here. Wand me. Chop chop." She orders me. "No!" I throw it to Fairy Godmother. "Bibbidi-bobbidi..."
