Jenna was completely done with her homework and had put in her headphones. A song by NeverShoutNever was playing when the door slowly opened, and if she hadn't had her eyes open she wouldn't be able to hear it over the loud music. She pulled out an earphone and let the other stay in, because, with only one on, she already didn't like the noise that seeped in through her right ear.
"I'm gonna go out so.." her brother trailed off.
"Okay?" It wasn't often her brother would update her in things like this in his life, so her voice sounded questioned.
"And my girlfriend wants to meet you." He opened the door slightly and- oh, wow. Okay, she did't expect to see Samantha of all people.
Not that Samantha wasn't pretty because, hell, she was gorgeous, so that made her wonder why she had picked her brother. And not that her brother wasn't capable of having a girlfriend like Samantha, but he was quite closed off and independent, and to himself, where Samantha, on the other hand, was very outgoing, and very.. well known (not like that because Samantha was no whore) and just the opposite of Dean.
I guess the saying 'opposites attract' applies in this relationship.
"Samantha?" Jenna questioned in disbelief, but it came out more rudely than she had hoped.
"Jenna?"
"You're my brother's girlfriend?"
"Um." She glanced over at Dean. "Yeah."
"Wait, you two know each other?" Dean chimed in.
"Uh, yeah. We ride the bus together," Jenna says. She realized that if Samantha truly didn't know she would see Jenna, then she wouldn't recognize this house. Did she recognize this house?
"Anyway, I'm leaving now, so if mom asks, I'm over at a friends', okay?" he asked, but it was more of a demand.
"Yeah, okay. Bye, have fun," Jenna said in a not-so-enthusiastic tone.
He softly shut the door and Jenna could distinctly hear Samantha say, "We should bring her along." Dean's whisper was far too low for her to hear what he said in reply, but then Samantha said, "Oh, c'mon, she needs a little fun. Besides, what will she be doing here."
"Sleeping." Jenna strained to hear Dean's sarcastic response.
"Seriously, who wants to do that on a Friday night!" Samantha whisper-shouted.
In Jenna's defense, she didn't mind sleeping. To her it was practically a talent, along with eating and masking her emotions.
The door inched open and Dean's head popped in. "Do you want to come with us?" Jenna could tell he was internally groaning.
"Nah, I'm good."
"See," Dean hissed at Samantha.
"Please, Jenna, come with us." Samantha begged much like Katie did earlier at lunch.
It was one thing to say a straight 'no' to Katie, but another to say it to Samantha, who was sweet and kind. So Jenna replied in the sweetest way possible, "No, I'm fine. I'll be fine. You don't have to worry about me."
Samantha sighed in defeat and pouted as Dean said bye and Jenna told them to be careful, and yeah, okay, Jenna's had a couple conversations with Dean, but none this long since a year ago.
She couldn't believe that it's been a year ago since everything happened, since her relationship with her mother, her grandfather, and especially with her brother had fallen apart.
-
Not even thirty minutes into her sleep and her phone vibrated, waking her up. A text from Katie had been received and a call from her mother she had missed eight minutes ago. She took it upon herself to call her mom first. She pressed the phone to her ear. Jenna thought she wasn't gonna pick up, and when the phone stopped ringing on the last ring her mothers voice came through the phone.
"Hey, Jenna, sweetie, I won't be home till the morning. Make sure you lock all the doors and check the security system. If you need anything just call me, okay?"
"Mom are you okay?" Her mother sounded rushed and she was probably busy, but Jenna decided to ask her.
"No, I'm fine. There's just a patient here, she's not doing well."
"Oh, okay." For a while it was silent until Jenna said, "I'll make sure to check everything."
"Alright. Bye Jenny."
When Jenna hung up she groaned at the nickname and for her interrupted nap. She stood up and locked the front and back door, then made sure the security system was set. When she got back to her room, she remembered Katie had texted her, so without a second thought, she read the message.
From Katie: Hey, guess what ;)
To Katie: What??
From Katie: I found an ojd friond of youra ;)
It was unusual for Katie to text like that, so Jenna called her.
"Hello," Katie said.
"Hey, Katie, are you okay?" Jenna asked, concern lingering her voice.
"No, yeah, I'm fine. Right guys?" She yelled.
A choruses of 'Yeahs' were heard over the phone.
How could Jenna forget? Katie had went to the party and before Jenna didn't hear it, but Katie's words were slightly slurred.
"Katie, are you drunk?" She had only seen her friend drunk twice.
"No, I'm fine. Come have a drink with us, Jenna." And there it was, Jenna should've saw this coming.
"I'm good," she snapped into the phone. "But call me when you're not drunk off your ass and more considerate of my feelings towards stupid, little get-togethers like these." She jammed her finger into the 'End Call' button and threw her phone next to her. Plugging in her earphones, she drowned her ears in the music and fell asleep shortly after.
