Do you ever have decide on whether you want to kill your best friend or hug them to death? Because Jenna has been thinking long and hard about this question.
After they left the park, Niall drove back to his house and said goodbye to Jenna and Katie. Jenna really wanted a goodbye from Harry, but he didn't really say much on the ride back and he went inside immediately, which to Jenna was kinda weird, but who was she to judge?
"You know, Jenna, a thank you would be greatly appreciated," Katie smirked while focusing on the road, heading to the mall. They still had three hours, so why not?
"Why should I thank you?" Jenna retorted.
"Because one, I am your best friend and have been here for the longest time and two, if it weren't for me you wouldn't have been able to see that Harry guy."
"And what makes you think I wanted to see this Harry guy?"
"Trust me, I just know." Katie wiggled her eyebrows. "I know you're into him, too."
"Katie, I don't even know anything about this guy, how could I be into him?"
"You might not like him, but you think he's cute, don't you?"
Jenna shrugged, and tried to act like it wasn't that big of a deal. "If I say thank you, will you shut up?"
"Mhm," Katie nodded.
Jenna sighed, "Thank you," and then, rolled her eyes.
"You're welcome," Katie smile widely as if she did the best thing in the world.
Katie pulled into a parking space then and parked the car. Jenna still couldn't believe she was skipping school. She's done it before, but it's been a long time since then.
"So, what about you and Niall?" Jenna asks, it was her turn to inquire about Katie's relationship.
"Oh, Jenna, he's really sweet and he has these really deep blue ocean eyes, they're so gorgeous. He's so gorgeous," Katie gushes. Jenna smiles at her best friend.
"He seems nice," Jenna stated.
"He is." Katie leans into Jenna's arm, to emphasize that she's falling for him. Jenna wishes she could say the same about herself.
-
Jenna's heart pounds in her chest, adrenaline-driven as Katie races to the school. They were at the food court in the mall and time just sort of slipped away from them. When Katie checked what time it was, she cursed under her breath and told Jenna to hurry so they wouldn't get there late.
The tires screeched as Katie slammed on the brakes, stopping at a red light. Anticipation filled Jenna, making her bounce her leg up and down. She bit her lip as she waited impatiently for the red light to turn green. Katie's foot collided with the gas pedal as soon as the green light illuminated the top circle on the traffic light.
The tires screeched one last time as Katie pressed the brakes and parked the car. The girls ran to the front of the school where students were scattered in small groups. They bent over with hands resting on their knees, trying to catch their breath. I really need to get in shape, Jenna thought.
"I don't... see your... mom," Katie said between breaths.
Jenna glanced around and Katie was right; Jenna's mom wasn't here, yet. She said she would be here at four. It was already four-twenty-two. Jenna furrowed her brows.
"What's wrong?" Katie asked.
"My mom was supposed to be here earlier."
"Try calling her, maybe she's just running late," Katie suggests.
"Alright." Jenna dials the number and brings the phone to her ear, still out of breath. Her mom picks up on the third ring. "Mom!" Jenna half-shouts.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Where are you?" Jenna tucks her free hand in her jeans' pocket.
"I'm at work." Did she forget to pick her up?
"What do you mean? You're supposed to be he- never mind, have a good day at work, mom." She ends the call, and tries to swallow the small bump that's formed in her throat. Her mom forgot to pick her up. How could she? She feels so forgotten and unimportant. "Can you give me a ride home?" she asks Katie, surprisingly her voice sounds normal.
Katie nods her head, "Yeah, yeah. Sure." Jenna couldn't ask for a better best friend because she had the best.
-
"You okay?" Katie asks as Jenna walks inside her room and tosses her backpack to her bed with great force.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Jenna stated.
"No, you're not, you haven't said anything till now," Katie pointed out. "What's wrong?"
Jenna sighed, "Nothing." She sat on her bed, hands in her lap.
"Come on, don't make me force it out of you," Katie warned, smiling evilly. She held her hands near Jenna's stomach, ready to tickle her.
"No! No, I'll tell you. I'll tell you." Jenna's hands shot up in defense. She lowered them and chewed on her lip.
"Well?" Katie encouraged.
"It's my mom," Jenna started. "I just- I don't really like it when she forgets about me." Jenna lowered her gaze to her lap, gulping. It sounded a lot more reasonable in her head.
"Well, no one does, silly." And although, that was supposed to make Jenna feel better, it didn't.
"But, like, she does it so often and it just makes me feel like.. shit, you know?"
"Yeah." But did Katie really understand? Or was she just saying it just to say it?
"My mom's changed a lot. Ever since, you know, my dad."
"Yeah, I know. I think everybody changes when someone leaves, its normal." Katie wrapped her arm around Jenna's shoulder. It's times like these Jenna's grateful for having a kind and caring best friend.
Tears pricked at Jenna's eyes, but she refused to let them out. "You know, I never thought my mom, my own mother, would forget to pick me up from school," Jenna laughed dryly.
Katie gave her sad smile. "She just has a lot on her plate right now," Katie assured her. Jenna wanted to believe that, but something made her think otherwise.
"This is the first time you mentioned your dad," Katie said softly, careful on the subject.
Jenna shrugged. What was she supposed to say, 'Well, you know, I don't like talking about my dead father so.' "Yeah, guess it's been a while, huh?" Jenna looked up at her best friend.
Katie nodded her head in agreement. "Are you gonna confront your mom about this?" Katie inquired.
"I don't think so," Jenna said, shaking her head. She was just afraid of causing more damage to the whole family by having this conversation with her mom.
"I think you should, she needs to know how you feel." Katie was right, Jenna's mom needed to know.
"I don't know I just.. I don't wanna hurt her, you know?"
Katie rubs her back soothingly, "Whatever you decide, just know I'll be here for you."
Jenna smiled, "I know you will."
