“Veronica sorry but you’re out!” Piper informs an amity girl called Veronica. We are playing a hand slapping game whilst we wait to be called for our aptitude test. We all sit around a large granite table for our faction the girls at one end the boys at the other. The rules of the game is to all play the same rhythm clapping and slapping our hands off our knees getting faster and swifter as we go and if you forget the rhythm or do it wrong you get eliminated.
I stare at all the other table’s abnegation kids don’t do anything not a word comes out of any of their mouths. Erudite revise maths and have a mini spelling bee. Candor has a debate. Dauntless kids play truth or dare.
“Ha, you’re eliminated Joan!” Piper says not stopping clapping. I play around with my ring waves off nausea crashing over me.
“Where did you get that?” Veronica questions me.
“At the diner a block away, the 60’s theme one” I answer her.
“Well the ring is lovely as is your relationship with Jack!” Veronica chimes.
“Thank you as is you relationship with Arthur!” I tell Veronica.
“Sorry Alexandra, goodbye!” Piper slaps her hands on her legs.
A man with a deep blue clipboard approaches the lunch hall and calls some names Alexandra and another girl called Tia from amity and out of the boys from amity Rob and Arthur. Veronica kisses Arthur goodbye and wishes him the very best of luck for his aptitude test.
“I’m worried about Arthur” Veronica says a forlorn expression crosses over her face.
“Why ever so?” I put a hand on her shoulder.
“What if he leaves me tomorrow” a tear trickles down her face.
“Then keep in touch with him or find someone else” I pat her shoulder and place my hands back on my lap.
“Thank you I know you’ll always be Amity because your so, so, so kind” Veronica cuddles me and I feel a tear land on my shoulder.
“Don’t cry!” then like I think the same about Jack and join her crying.
Ten minutes pass and Piper wins the hand slapping game and the people that were called to take their test come back. Veronica runs towards Arthur at top speed and flings herself into his arms, he drops her. He is pale, very, very, very pale.
“What’s wrong?” Veronica asks Arthur after she has scrambled back up to her feet.
“Nothing” Arthur snaps it at her like a crocodiles snaps its jaw.
“You can tell-“Veronica starts.
“Just be quiet!” He storms away a thunderous look on his face.
“STOP IT!” Veronica’s voice booms echoing around the hall. It is so loud that everyone in the hall stops what they are doing and stares at the now blushing Veronica.
“I am breaking up with you Veronica, there was never a spark between us,” Arthur glares at Veronica a smirk then breaking out in once angry face, Veronica sniffles “Oh come on, and I thought you knew we weren’t a proper thing” Arthur sneers at Veronica before taking his seat back at the table.
“Don’t worry about him he doesn’t deserve you!” I raise my voice so Arthur can hear.
“So much can happen in ten minutes right, oh and thanks, you are right he doesn’t deserve me he is a jerk” Veronica makes the last bit louder, on purpose.
The man with the clipboard appears again and this time Jack, I, Veronica and a boy called Jeremy get called.
I am taking deep breaths, in and out in and out. It is time. In and out in and out.
