Stabbing at my Yorkshire pudding with my fork, I sigh. Nerves have started to kick in sending a swarm of butterflies to my stomach. I stuff peas and my Yorkshire pudding into my mouth, hungrily. I had that burger at lunch and it’s half five now, so I am peckish.

“I thought you said before that you weren’t nervous for this test” Dad says after swallowing a mouthful of vegetables.

“I’m not, I know what I’m picking, it’s just.....Jack” I murmur.

“What about Jack?” Mum sets down her fork, waiting for my answer.

“What if he doesn’t choose what I choose and I’ll never see him ever again!” I gulp my throat dry as a bone, I drink my apple juice.

“Don’t think like that” Mum comforts me, seeing my sadness in my facial expression before picking her fork up and eating.

“I can’t help it” I eat a bit broccoli.

“Forget about him just now” Dad tells me.

After fifteen minutes we have surprisingly finished our meal and are onto our dessert, eton mess.

“This is bliss, what a fantastic job you have made of this” My Dad tells my Mum and I simply nod in agreement, savouring every scrumptious mouthful.

“I’m glad you both, like it” Mum smiles, tucking in.

After dinner I check my phone, a text from Jack, it reads:

Hi my lovely Joan, I was wondering if you could meet me for half an hour at the tree we first met, come ASAP xxx you’re Jack

I get my handbag out of my wardrobe and shove in my purse and phone then I run down the stairs.

“Yes, you can go” Mum escorts me out the front door and hugs me.

When I reach the tree, I squeal in delight. Flashing lights are wrapped round the trees trunk and branches, Pinned to the middle of the trunk is a sign and it says I love you Joan! It’sin bold letters. Perched in the trees branches is Jack holding a cut out love-heart, with my name inside it.

“Roses are red, violets are blue, and Joan I haven’t set my eyes on a prettier girl than you!” Jack says in a loud voice. I giggle and rush over to the tree.

I make him repeat it all, while I film it on my phone. He then jumps down from the tree and kisses me.

“Thanks so much Jack” I hold his hands, gleefully.

He gives me a boost up onto the tree and I sit there, laughing at his many attempts of trying to get up beside me. I finally help him and he gratefully accepts my help and gives me a quick hug. I rest my head on his shoulder and take everything in, everything he has done for me.

“I love you Joan” He says.

“I love you too Jack” I say back.

“Tomorrow will be tough, seeing people come and go” Jack sighs.

“I know” I put my hand on his arm.

“Are you worried?” He asks me.

“A tad, are you?” I ask him back and he nods.

“A bit as well” He shuffles towards me a bit and I tighten my grip on his arm in case he falls.

“Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, Dauntess or here, Amity, that is our options Jack, our decision will change our lives forever” I state the obvious.

“Come on” Jack slides off the tree and I follow and he catches me. He carry’s me all the way home and we talk, about tomorrow, anxious people, the other factions, new people joining, old people going, the change, all that stuff.

When we reach my front garden it’s been longer than half an hour but I don’t care. We kiss once more before I push open the door, waving goodbye.

The rest of the evening goes quick, me and Jack text, I play board games with my family, we watch T.V, I stay up later than usual, to chat. Until I fall asleep on the couch.
