Lafayette POV
I wake up the next morning and slump out to the kitchen. John is up again, and making some bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, and pancakes. He can certainly do it all. He notices me standing in the doorway and pulls out his earphones. I hear the faint sound of "Angel With A Shotgun" playing out of them.
"Hey dude!" he says cheerily.
"Bonjour..." I say, trying not to fall asleep.
"Why are you so tired, man? Aren't you excited?"
"For what..?"
"Dude," he says, "You're going on a date today."
I immediately snap awake, realizing the full weight of the situation. "Merde.."
John cocks his head to one side. "You good, bro?"
"I gotta get ready..."
"It's nine am. Have some breakfast first."
I sit down at the table as John serves me some hashbrowns and pancakes.
"Syrup? Butter? Bacon? Eggs?"
I nod to all four and he puts it all on my plate. He serves himself next.
We eat and talk about boys, all the embarrassing things we've done in front of them. It's just us awake right now, so we have all the food to ourselves. John is a very good cook.
"This is very good, John. You have talent."
He smiles, "You're too kind. But it's really nothing. I just like to cook. My mom taught me how to make my first meal - spaghetti - when I was like nine. I've been doing this pretty much my whole life."
"Your mother is a very good teacher if she can produce a child that can cook this well."
"Yeah, my mom was the best teacher I ever had."
"You're very lucky to have a mom like that. My grand-mère didn't really teach me much, as she was sick a lot."
"You grew up with your grandmother?"
"Oui. I got kicked out of the house at a young age."
"That's awful! But at least you get to see another relative. I never get to see my grandma."
"Why not?" I ask, cocking my head to one side.
"Grandma is old fashioned, so she isn't really on board with the whole gay thing. You're lucky that your grandma is so supportive."
"I actually never told my grandma that I was gay. No one in my family knows."
"I thought you got kicked out for being gay... or I assumed..."
"I didn't get kicked out for being gay. It was something else."
"If you don't mind me asking..?"
"It's fine, but it's a book."
"You mean a long story?" he asks, looking confused.
"Oh yeah, that's what it is. Pardon my English," I say, trying to lighten the mood. I take a shaky breath and start the story. "I'm transgender. When I was very young, I didn't really fit in with any of the other girls. I would talk to all the boys, and we'd do boy things, like play with cars and play football. When I turned six years old, I had a birthday party. I invited all of my friends, which were the boys at my school. There was this one boy who gave me my first ever football, which was one of my favorite presents. But when my parents found out, they got really mad and threw it away, saying that football was for boys. I was very sad, but continued to hang out with all the boys. I continued to feel out of place, so one day I got on the family computer and searched up what I was feeling. I did my research and found out that what I was experiencing was gender dysphoria. I told my parents and they immediately sent me to live with my grand-mère. I didn't really know I was gay until later."
