THE INFECTEDIt was a rainy day, as the thunder roared and the lighting struck onto the state of Oregon. The rain was more intense than usual, making all of the pavement on my college campus darker and wet. I was trying to run over to my dorm before my hoodie became a literal sponge. Suddenly, somebody ran up to me, grabbing my shoulder. "Kate, you need to see what's going on! Hurry!", he said, breathing heavily. I followed him, making it there much later than him. The rain was coming down so hard, that I couldn't find my way entirely around campus.
When I finally got to the destination, I slightly looked up, and saw a brown haired girl standing on top of the roof of a building. I stared at her, squinting, for a while. I finally realized the I knew her, she was a girl from one of my classes. She was a nice girl, but I always felt like she was hiding something. Why is she on the roof? What's happening? When did she get up there?
Loud banging came from the roof as well. "The cops are trying to break down the door! She blocked it!", somebody yelled. Why did she block the cops out? I slowly backed up to get a closer look, but I was interrupted by loud screaming and gasps. I looked closer as I saw her step of the roof and plummet to the ground. She jumped! I backed up against a tree, as I saw a girl smash into the pavement. Students screamed and covered their eyes, some even fell to the ground. Blood spilled from her head as if a glass of juice had just shattered. I had never seen someone die right in front of me. I guess it's just one of those things that would make me colder.
...
...I wouldn't be mentioning this story if it wasn't for what happened quickly after. I was one of the few peoples to see these disgusting creatures becoming a thing. I was running back to my dorm, when I heard even more blood curdling screams. I gave into my curiosity and turned around. I almost tripped on nothing but air. She had gotten back up! She limped towards the crowd of shocked people, although I'm not sure what they were exactly shocked about. The fact that she killed herself, or the fact that she had gotten back up. The rain kept coming down hard, I was soaking wet at this point.
She was slow. The others easily backed up from her grasp, as she growled and walked towards them. A police officer finally came down from the roof and grabbed the girl by her neck. They skies darkened as she sunk her teeth into his arms. She ripped a chunk of it right off. He screamed and fell backwards in pain. More screams echoed around. I was confused, it all happened so fast. My mind could only make up "What the hell?" and "How?"
I pushed open the doors, entered the messy dorms hallway, and slammed them shut, grabbing a nearby chair as a barricade. I felt a shiver run down my spine. A sigh of relief left me. My thoughts started to come up with rational explanations.
She survived the fall.
Maybe it's some sort of robot.
Hallucinations.
Am I going crazy?I continued farther into deep thought. I didn't know what to think. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around, quickly backing into the wall. "Kate?" he said. 'He' refers to a blonde, tall, childhood friend I've had since first grade. He was accompanied by a professor, and a younger looking girl. I assumed the two were related, both of them having hazel eyes and dark brown hair.
"Gabe... I... what's going on outside?" I asked.
"No idea, I was desperately searching for you before you got... hurt... by those things." He replied.
"Who are these two?" I continued.
"That's Andy, and the girl is his daughter, Saddie." Gabe explained, the two of them waving. Our short conversation got interrupted by a groaning noise echoing through the hallway. We stared down the long dark corridor, listening closely. Andy quickly pushed Saddie behind him. We stood there for about 2 minutes, watching and waiting. Suddenly, a loud BANG shot through the hallway. We turned around to see the large doors wide open.
A few terrified looking people rushed in. They were followed by some other people, they seemed odd though. Sick, green, red, bloody. Andy quickly let us out through an emergency exit, that lead out into the back of the grounds. I felt a dread when I realized the campus was entirely abandoned, with a few lone survivors.
"We need to leave! We'll come back when it's all sorted!" Andy yelled.
"What if it's never sorted! This looks like.. an epidemic thing, right?" Gabe yelled back.
"It looks like some twisted sickness, we just need to find a place to stay for the night." I yelled once again.
"Let's go to the train station, the walls there are strong! Those creatures can't get through!" Saddie joined into the yelling. We all took Saddie's advice and took off into the woods for the train station. We all split up, and I occasionally caught a glimpse of Gabe, Saddie, or Andy. Maybe at some points I would see one of those twisted sick people. I reached the train station after Saddie. Andy and Gabe arrived at the same time. Andy grabbed Saddie close. "Why'd you just separate from me, Saddie? You know I want you to be safe at all costs!" Andy sighed.
I took a glance over to an idle train. I peeked in a window and saw the doors shut. With struggle, I could open the door and poke my head in. A bullet flew straight past my head. I fell backwards. Gabe, Andy, and Saddie ran over to me.
"You okay?!"
"Yeah, yeah!"We stared at the door, until Andy yelled out "Who's there?!" with Saddie close behind him.
"We don't want to hurt anyone! Just leave, before a roamer sees us!" A voice from inside screamed. Roamer?
"We mean no harm? We're trying to escape whatever was happening back at our college campus! Did you see?" Gabe yelled out. My long, dark brown hair blew in the chilling wind, as we waited for some sort of answer.A black haired boy with a baseball cap stepped out of the train with a rifle in his hands. "That didn't just happen in your campus, it's happening all over the world. Disgusting creatures, named Roamers, ROAMING our lands. It's some sort of infection." the boy explained.
I seemed to cling near Gabe, using him as a human shield, but also because I felt most comfortable around him since I knew him the longest. Silence lingered between us and the boy. A blonde haired girl quickly popped out beside the boy. "Hi, I'm Pepper, this is Jason. We also have a friend Brian, he's over in the back." she immediately explained. The boy, Jason, gave her a look.
We introduced ourselves, I was kind dreading doing so, because these were total strangers. I guess Gabe was OUR Pepper, because he immediately started introducing us. Those creatures, roamers, started to groan in the distance. They loomed in the horizon, as the sun set into their silhouettes. Jason reluctantly pulled us into the train, shutting the door and barricading it with a chair. I was about to tell him how idle that is, but I ignored my urges. I didn't wanna give up our shelter right away.
"This won't be permanent." Jason sighed.
(A/N: So that's "Alone in a World of Monsters", what do you think? I know zombie stories aren't common here, but I thought it was good enough to be published. Anyways, that's it for now.)
