"Shit! No- Don't be- Ka-!"
"Kate! You ther-?"
"Ka-! Plea-!"

"We need to transport blood!"
"I'll give her some..."
"No, your already suffering from the gunshot. I'll have to keep both of you rested and safe,"
"Where are we gonna go after this?"
"... I don't know,"

I woke up, gasping for air. I felt a tight wrap around my shoulder. "You're alive! Thank god!" Max screamed.

"We has to transport some blood from Max to you. It was a hard task, but he knows a lot..," Kara said. We stayed silent for a while. "We're the last ones..." I said, silently. Max nodded, frowning. I hugged him, he hugged back. I tried to stand up, but Kara gently put me back down. "Neither of us will have it good if we started walking," she said.

I remembered her gun wound. She had it bandages up though, Max was really good at this. "I'll go find something. Maybe we can find a nice place we can live in for a while!" He said. He got up and began to walk around. Kara and I stood in silence. "You remember when I took that file on me?" She asked. I nodded. "Well... I was studying anatomy and physiology. I wasn't the best student though, sometimes a trouble maker. But hey, that made me who I am. A survivor." She said.

I giggled. "We're survivors. Both of us and Max." I said. We laughed. "Do you remember pizza? Oh man, that was so good. Oh, and garlic bread." Kara said. I did. Those were the easy days. I remembered when I used to invite Gabe to my dorm room all the time so we could binge shows and eat food. A normal college life.

We suddenly heard walking in the distance. Roamers. "Just when you think you're safe." Kara said. We couldn't get up that easily, but we needed to go. I stood up, and helped Kara up. She began to limp away from the coming roamers. Suddenly, our shoulders were grabbed by something. We were helped through the forest by some random strangers, but we walked for a while. It felt like hours almost, but it wasn't We struggled to move until we reached large concrete walls. Gates opened wide to show a large community of people. "Welcome to Kellingston," a voice greeted, "a community of people surviving a new world."

I was in awe of the sight. No roamers. I was suddenly hugged by Max, who had found the place. "Kate! This is our new home! Our new place! We're safe here!" He said. The people led us to a small shack. "This is your home. Please settle down, and we can bring fresh food and clothing," they said. We agreed. I let down my satchel next to the small cot.

"Can you believe it Kate? It's... a home. A place of safety!" Kara asked.

I couldn't believe, though. This is safe. We're safe. Everyone's safe. No roamers, no raiders, no bandits. It was like how everything used to be. The town was bustling, and though the houses had tin roofs and were badly built. But I was grateful. I stood outside, watching a beautiful sunset in the horizon. Max stood next to me. He gripped my hand as we both stood in the rays of the warm sun.

We're all okay. We're here. We're alive
This is what safe feels like.
