If Thomas Jefferson was impressed by anything other than intelligence, it was bravery. One of the traits he doubted he'd achieved, but he could always identify bravery when he saw it.
He didn't know how long he stared at the boy who was writing his biology paper.
Marcello Ford's messy black hair was plastered to his forehead by sweat, from the deadly incident Thomas was lucky to witness ten minutes ago. If Miss Kent managed to hit this boy, who stepped between a clawn and a crazy girl with a baseball bat, Ford's head would've been smashed. Yet, here he was, watching the boy writing his paper rather calmly.
A faint knock on the door brought him to reality. After a second, the door opened and a head poked in. Thomas smiled a little. Just the one he wanted. He signed her to come in, shooting a quick look at Ford. He was absorbed in the paper, not knowing what was going on.
Thomas looked at the new comer, who was silently giving him an essay he knew which was well written even before looking at it. Ashley Kent was a girl who worked hard to get what she wanted.
As he started to read it, the bell rang, and students started to put their papers on his desk and walk out. He didn't miss the way Miss Kent tried to get Ford's attention and the murderous glare he shot in her direction.
He also noticed Ashley Kent's shocked state and Ford's tensed shoulders when he talked.
"Mr. Ford, I think you owe me an explanation on what happened in the gym ten minutes ago."
