chapter one

Richie wanted to run.

Why was he dragged to this dumb, small town filled with close minded assholes with their heads up their asses?

Oh yeah. Because his mom got a new job and he has to follow her to the end of the earth. He's tired of losing friends and changing houses. He's tired of being ridiculed for liking boys and girls. He's tired of his mom crying over his dad who cheated on her with his assistant.

He's tired of being alone.

"Richie? Did you get all your boxes in? Looks like it might rain" Maggie stepped into his bedroom and leaned a hand on the doorframe. Her hair was pulled into a ponytail and she was wearing her workout clothes. She looked a little tired, but Richie can understand why. He loves her through all of the shit that they go through.

He nodded from where he sat on the small couch in his room. The house was a big, two story house. His room was the biggest, considering he'll be alone in the house he should have fun adventuring. His house is surrounded by tall forest trees, kind of creepy if you asked him.

"I'm sorry we had to move. I know you liked California—"

"I know mom, it's okay." He assured with a half attempted smile. She smiled back, warm and kind.

" Okay... well I start work tomorrow. I'll leave you some money. I hear this town has quite the history and excellent diner food" she winked and left the room.

Richie dropped his smile and fell back on to the couch with a sigh. The house was old. Victorian with high ceilings and glass chandeliers. His house was the only one in town like that.

He heard his mom humming a soft tune from downstairs and slowly let his eyes drift shut until he fell asleep.

The next day was spent unpacking.

His mom had left early that morning so most of the house was still covered in boxes. Richies room was almost complete.

His bed was made and his posters were hung on the walls, covering the deep red wallpaper behind it. He had one window that was covered by a black out curtain, Richie loved the sun but hated being woken up by it.

His room instead was lit up with Golden Christmas lights and a lamp with an orange glow. Richie pushed back his curtain to reveal the setting sun that turned the sky pastel pink.

His stomach made a loud noise and he looked down at it. "Fucking great"
He grabbed his skateboard and the money his mom had left him on the counter.

The ride to town was quiet. A few cars passed and kids rode around on bikes. He didn't really know where he was going, but followed the sidewalk until he came to the edge of a forest.

Richie stopped and looked up at a sign that read, 'Hanlons Diner' and an arrow pointing ahead. He shrugged and followed it.

A bell jingled above his head as he entered the diner. 50s music played lightly as people talked quietly. He looked around until he spotted a booth in the corner with red vinyl seats.

He set his skateboard down and seated himself.

"Hello, my names Mike, I'll be your waiter today. What can I get you?"

Richie looked up to meet kind eyes and a bright smile. Mike wore a white apron and red hat with a notepad in his hand. He looked almost the same age as Richie

"Hi, I'll just have a coke and fries" Richie smiled back and mike nodded, jotting down the order and leaving Richie.

Richie played on his game boy until mike came back with his food. Richie thanked him and expected mike to leave but he stayed.

" I don't recognize you, are you new to town?" Mike asked with a smile

"Yeah, just moved yesterday. My names Richie" Richie replied

" nice to meet you. Enjoy your meal" he left at that

He was nice, Richie would have to remember to come here more often. As mike walked away a new customer walked in

"Hanlon! How's it going? Still haven't aged a bit" the older man smiled and mike smiled back

" Same old me."

After finishing his drink and fries Richie left his money on the table and left the diner.
