chapter three

"i'm sorry for leaving you guys for so long! if i were you i would go back and read the last chapter just so you remember what's happening!"

He saw it in a dream

Cherry lips and sharp teeth. Dripping blood and a tongue sliding across the wet, red surface. He felt it. Soft brown hair and even softer skin. The scent of vanilla and cherry cola, filling him up till it was all he wanted to smell.

And when he woke up he was out of breath and sweating.

Richie jolted up and grabbed around for his glasses. Once they were on he looked around frantically. He calmed down a bit and looked at the clock that read 10:15am and a sticky note that said "gone for work, back by 5pm".

He sighed and rubbed his eyes, washing away the lucid dream that reminded him of last night outside of the diner. He let out a shaky breath and threw the covers off his legs. A want grew strong inside his chest as he thought of last night.

The cold floorboards creaked under his feet as Richie walked into the kitchen and sat down at the counter, holding his head in his hands.

It kept playing over and over in his head. Sharp teeth. Blood. A mantra over and over in his head. And the more it rewinded in his brain the more he wanted to see the boy in the red lettermen jacket.

Richie glanced up at the window by the front door as a man on a bike cycled past his house, throwing a news paper on the way. He got up to retrieve it with heavy steps.

Once he opened the big oak door he looked down and gasped. He jumped back and looked down at the thing on his doormat. It was a squirrel, it's neck snapped with blood leaking from it onto the 'Welcome!' mat.

"What the fuck..." he mumbled to himself as he looked down at the poor rodent. Why would someone do this? They just moved here and they already had neighbors who hated them. Richie sighed and grabbed the edge of the mat, folding it around the squirrel. He held it as far as possible away from his body and threw it in his trash can on the side of the house.

The missing doormat would be easier to explain to his mom than the murdered squirrel on their doorstep. For a second it reminded him of his dream but the boy looked too innocent to do something like this.

or maybe not.

Richie closed his front door and ran upstairs to change before he went to town.

The library was quiet other than the shuffle of feet and pages turning. He walked through each row of book cases, scanning each sign that read
A-Z.

even though no one was in that section of the library he was in, he felt like he was being watched. He tucked his hands in his pocket and ignored the chill that ran through his body.

He stopped in front of the small section of books. He pushed his glasses up the slope of his nose and squinted at the titles:
