Percy always woke up about the same time every morning. His body clock woke him up at 9 am every morning. That wasn't to say he actually got up at that time, however, what caught Percy's attention was that it seemed far too bright for that time of the morning. In fact, his clock agreed, blinking the time '11:30 am'.
Percy frowned. Though Loki often slept longer than he did, his boyfriend would normally be up by now. The arm of said boyfriend was wrapped around Percy's torso.
"Loki?"Percy whispered. He gained no response. Percy registered something wet against the crook of his neck, where Loki's head rested. It was slightly uncomfortable. "Loki, are you crying?"
Still, Loki said nothing.
Now thoroughly concerned, Percy pushed the former Asgardian Prince off of him. Loki rolled limply onto his back. Percy looked at the sleeping man.
There was dried blood staining his pale skin, the trail leading to where it bled from his eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. With a yelp, Percy leaped out of bed. Loki was more than sleeping.
He was dead.
Percy staggered down the hallway. They had their own house now.
"Loki!?" He called, frantically checking every room. "Loki, where the Hades are you!? Your little illusion isn't funny!" After accepting mortality, Loki had lost his ability to use illusions, but Percy was hoping with all he was worth that the ability had somehow come back.
But no matter where he searched, the real Loki was nowhere to be found.
But what if that was the real Loki?
No. It couldn't be. Percy refused to believe it.
Swallowing the lump forming in his throat, Percy rushed down the hall and back to their room. He fumbled to find Tony Stark's phone number, refusing to look at Loki.
Percy chewed on his lip as he waited for Stark to pick up the phone. It was an anxious habit he'd picked up.
"Percy, what is it?" Tony's voice spoke at last. "It's your day off isn't it?"
Percy cut right to the chase. "How quickly can you get 'round here?" he demanded.
"I- soon, I guess. Percy, what's wrong? You don't sound to good." Tony adopted a worried tone.
Percy tried to regulate his breathing and control his shaking hands. "I-I'm fine, but Loki- he's not too good. Just- hurry, please."
"Yeah, okay. I'm on my way."
The phone beeped once Tony ended the call.
~~~~
"Holy shit. Ah, okay." Tony ran a hand through his tousled hair as he looked at the cold body on the bed. "So you decided it would be a better idea to call me, instead of the cops?"
Percy stood in the doorway, gripping the wooden frame. He still couldn't bring himself to believe Loki was dead. He refused. This was impossible and not happening. Maybe he was dreaming- sleepwalking even. Percy refused to enter the room. He swallowed hard. "Is he- is he really... dead?"
It wasn't like Percy had never seen a dead body before- in fact he'd seen plenty. But none of them were Loki's. None of them mattered to him quite like Loki did. Except for them, but that was a topic Percy couldn't let himself delve into right now.
How could this happen? Right under his nose, under his own roof?
"Oh jeez Percy. Yeah, he's dead. I mean," Tony pointed at Loki. "That very evidently suggests dead. People don't do that in a normal occurrence! You don't have to be a forensic person to tell that!"
Percy flinched and Tony sighed. He knew the kid had been through a lot. Loki had been Percy's saving grace- his remedy. Percy was trembling where he stood and looking quite ill. Percy was going almost as pale as Loki right now. He noticed a drying trail of blood on Percy's neck but decided that didn't need to be pointed out right now.
"I'll call 911. See what they can tell us." said Tony as he fished his phone out of his pocket.
When the cops finally arrived Percy and Loki's house was taped off. Percy had gained a shirt, but hardly any colour returned to his face. Tony asked the ambulance to check Percy over. He looked like he was going into shock. They put him in the back of the ambulance and wrapped him up, trying to get him to calm down.
Meanwhile, Tony watched as forensics and a couple of detectives scoured the house for clues. Finally someone approached the billionaire.
"What've you found?" Tony asked urgently.
"Sir, there is no sign of forced entry. We'll need to do an autopsy and you both will need to come with us back to the precinct." said a lady. If Tony recalled correctly, she was one of the detectives. He nodded and was escorted to a car which would drive them there. Percy soon joined him. He looked a little better physically.
Percy simply stared out the car window the whole ride, saying nothing and hardly moving, looking at nothing.
"Percy?" Tony asked gently. He received no indication that he'd been heard.
"Why?" Percy whispered eventually. Tony's head snapped up at the sound of the raven's croaky voice. He sounded on the brink of crying.
"I don't know. But when I find out who, there will be he'll to pay." Tony promised.
"No. There'll be worse."
