a lantern.

The sky is painted with stars. You take seat to rest while Jungkook heads off to a stall to buy two lanterns. You watch him, his broad shoulders, toned legs. How did you end up here? You knew you weren't ready for all these new people in your life, who came in so suddenly, so unexpectedly, like a downpour in summer. Having more people you care about means more chances for you to get hurt when they leave. They will leave, no matter what they say. You've learnt this the hard way, and nothing could convince you otherwise.

Your thoughts are interrupted when Jungkook returns with just one lantern. "This was the only one left. Do you mind sharing a wish?"

His child-like mind makes you laugh, "You can have it. I don't believe in these wishes anyway."

You start walking towards the river. "Why not?"

"I've been here ever since I could remember. Even after my dad passed away, I came here alone. Every year I wished my mom would come back, you know?" you sigh, these weren't the most pleasant memories, "I stopped coming when she got sick."

"Oh," he looks away, "I'm sorry." You can see him going deep into thought, probably looking for ways to lighten the mood. This is what happens to people who get close to you, they get splashed in the face with tough life and sometimes it's too hard to take. So they leave.

"What if I ask you to wish for me this time?" he smiles.

"Wish for you?"

"Yeah, we're going to release a new album soon. Wish for me, for us."

New album? Does that mean they're going to go on tour too? You could feel your heart shattering. Even though all your life you've been prepared for people leaving, the sheer thought is unbearable. You put on your mask again, like every other time you got hurt. You smile, "Of course."

You find an empty spot along the river bank. Kneeling down next to each other you light your lamp. When you look at him, he has his eyes closed, making his wish. You can't look away, his face lighted up from the flame in the lantern. He looked heavenly. You notice a mole under his nose and under his lower lip. He opens his eyes to catch you staring. "Ready?"

You slowly lower the lantern into the water together. He splashes the water lightly to make the lantern move away. His eyes were glimmering, sparkling. He looks at you, eyes unwavering. A warm heat rushes up your neck and spreads to your ears.

You look away quickly, your heart beating out of your chest. You could feel his eyes on you, you keep looking at the lantern, floating further and further away. You were close enough that you could almost hear the sound of his breath. "Hey," he whispers.

You can't find the courage to look at him, too scared to think of what will happen next. You can't let your guard down, not now. "Hm?" you keep looking down at the water.

"Do you want to know what I wished for?"

"What did you wish for?" your voice had dropped to whisper too.

"I wished that you'd realize that this isn't fair, that you don't deserve any of this," he was carefully wording his thoughts, "That even though it may feel like nothing is getting better, the fact that you haven't given up on your mom or yourself is enough. And stop thinking you have to do everything alone. Let me help you. I'm here now, and I promise I won't leave you."

You don't know where your tears come from, but you can't wipe them away fast enough. It was like all your emotions built up to this point and when triggered they didn't stop flowing. The minute you feel his hand on your shoulder, you lunge into his chest, burying your face. You start shaking, crying your eyes out while he holds you firmly, caressing your back. "It's okay. Just let it all out, I got you."

Your eyes feel sore by the time you get back to the rest of the guys. After all that, you don't feel like being seeing, you just wanted to go home.

"Oh there you are, I was starting to get worried," Namjoon smiles, "The rest are ready to go, get in guys."

You try to hide your face the best you can without looking like a complete idiot. Will they have a lot of questions? Will they think I'm weird? As if reading your thoughts Jungkook comes to your rescue. "Hyung, is it okay if I walk her back? It's a pretty night, it would be a shame to waste it."

They seem to communicate just by looks because after a minute Namjoon gets into the Subaru with a wave and they drive into the night.

The walk home felt too short, time flies faster in good company. You talked about so much, and he opened up to you too. About how it's not easy being famous, how tiring it can get. Crazy diets, worrying about how fans will respond to literally everything they do, stressing about if heeven deserves all the love. He had a hearty laugh, the type that could fill black holes, wash out misery. You kept praying you weren't just dreaming.

By the time you reach home you felt full, like you've just eaten a Christmas dinner for 12 by yourself. Overwhelming joy, comfort and warmth spreading through your body like a wild fire. It was like you were starting to see your black and white life in Technicolor.

"Do you see your parents often?" you ask him before opening the door. As if a last grasp on this magical night before your reality comes crashing on your head again.

"Not as much as I'd like to. But I left home when I was 15, so I'm used to it now. My hyungs really did raise me, they're like my second set of parents. They make sure I don't miss home," he stops, "I really like talking to you Y/n."

"Me too," you smile, "Thank you, for everything."

"No don't thank me yet, it sounds like a good bye, which it isn't. Let me just take our manager and leave for today." Oh that's right, their manager. I hope he's still alive.

The sight awaiting you on the other side of thedoor is beyond your wildest dreams. Your mother sits cross-legged on the floorfacing the man who's dealing her a deck of cards. Your life is just full ofsurprises now, and you weren't ready at all.
