Friends With a Monster

Chapter 1: Exchanging of Lives

I walked back, happy that I made a new friend. When I arrived my mom immediately hugged me, because I had stayed away longer than usual.
"I was about to send your brothers after you!" she cried out, squeezing me, nearly to death.

"I'm fine mom I was just playing." I said partly lying.

"nO yOU ARe NoT FiNE, yOu CAN't jUsT STaY AwAy" She screamed at me.

"I get it mom, sorry." I chuckle a bit, amused by her worry

She let go and pat me on the head. I laughed a bit and walked back into out house cave thing. I sat down and opened my book, reading. Mom sent my brothers and sisters in and we had to yet another hunter drill. We all hid in the small crevices in the cave house thingy's walls.

Mom had got into a costume like thing and pretend to be a hunter, she looked really silly. Then when the drill ended, mom went out to go get us some dinner. Now it was just me, my brothers, and sisters.

"It's been 8 hours later since she left, I'm going out to find her!" Shouted Hunter

"No! You can't go out.. It's dark out.. You know how dangerous it is for us in the dark." replied Theo

"I don't care! I'm going to get mom!" Hunter ran out, but none of them knew that I had already left.

I walked through the forest sniffing and looking for mom. Thanks to my disease Ophthalmolegro, I could see in the dark, unlike my brothers. I was slightly worried for Hunter, though. He could get hurt out here.

I picked up on my mother's scent and bolted in that direction. I then reached her, and she was guarding the food she had gotten for us. Three people were standing in front of her, the three people I had met earlier. I smelled blood, not just her's but what smells like blood from a child.. A child from my age.

I stayed hidden, I watched what was happening. The man with a shotgun was holding it hostilly at my mother, while the other one had a bandage and was bandageing... wait IS THAT TORD!?

Now I couldn't hold it anymore, my mother was in trouble and my friend was hurt. Then as soon as I was about to jump Hunter and Theo both ran past me and began attacking the people, I roared and jumped down as well, but instead of attacking I protected the people.

I didn't know what was happening, and I wasn't a good hunter so my defensive actions were useless. The man with the shotgun had fallen, I assumed he was playing dead, but so was my mother. I looked back at the two I was standing in front of, the grown up and my friend, Tord.

I then looked back to find my brothers growling at me. Slowly walking towards me under the moonlight. Then I saw the man with the big eyebrows, get up and he pumped his gun, shooting it at my mom. I screamed and ran over to her, the man then fired a warning shot to my brothers and he grabbed what I'm assuming to be his husband and ran.

I sprinted over to my mom, and held her. Her breathing was slow, almost nonexistent. I could feel her heart and it was so soft, the pumping. A tear rolled down her face and she quietly whispered to me

"Thomas.... Protect your brothers, and take this.. It will guide you through life.¨ she handed me a necklace, and her breathing stopped. As well as the throbbing in her chest. I didn't know what happened.. But I knew she was dead.

I don't know how to react, I didn't know if I should cry or try to avenge her. It was all so confusing. My brothers helped me carry her back, as well as the food. We all snuggled up to her body, using the last of its warmth for comfort.
