"I think you're my soulmate."
The words played over and over in Virgil's mind. Even though he had known long ago, it still felt strange to hear it out loud. Virgil looked up at Roman, setting his hand on the side of Roman's face, gently. Roman winced- his jaw was still in pain from the sucker-punch he'd received not long ago.
"Yeah? Well, here's the thing. I know you're my soulmate."
"How long have you known?"
"Years."
Roman processed this information, trying to pinpoint when the first time he had laughed around Virgil was. As he threw himself back in time, looking at all the time's he'd laughed in front of Virgil, the moment hit him like a train. "All the way back in high-school. The day we all went out to the park with Logan's brother." He'd say, as if he wanted Virgil to confirm. Virgil had his face buried in his-... friends? Lovers? Roman's chest. He'd nod softly. "But it was before that. It was before Patton and I came to check on you, it was.. It was the reason Patton and I came to check on you." Another nod."Why didn't you tell me?" Roman asked, softly, concern lacing his voice as his hands rubbed soft, gentle circles in Virgil's back. "Scared." He'd heard Virgil mumble. "Of?"
"What if you didn't want me to be your soulmate?"
"Wouldn't change the fact that you are."
"Yeah, but-"
"Virgil, look at me."
Virgil, who was shaking considerably less now, looked up, the ghost of tears on his cheeks. Roman didn't say anything. They were both quiet- Roman, analyzing the situation and deciding his best course of action and Virgil, who was too scared to say another word. Then Roman tilted his head and leaned forward without warning, gently placing his lips on Virgil's. Lips on lips. All of Virgil's worries faded away, and he felt like he finally had a future to look forward to. He had someone he knew he would spend his life with, someone who would never leave no matter how tough things got. None of this seemed to cross his mind before, and he wasn't sure why it happened now, but he was glad. He felt like so long as Roman was by his side, he had nothing to be afraid of.When Roman pulled away, Virgil whined softly. Roman chuckled, softly, wiping away any remnants of tears that may have still been on his soulmate's cheeks. "I love you, Virgil. So many years I'd just come to terms that I didn't have a soulmate, and then.. you came into my life. You never laughed- not a genuine one, not really. I didn't have a way of knowing, but I knew I loved you. I couldn't explain it- and I'd laughed in front of you so many times, and you hadn't said a word, so I assumed we must not have been soulmates. But I still loved you."
"Even though you might have had someone el-"
"Virgil, no, don't you get it? I knew. I didn't have any proof, but I sort of.. felt it."Virgil sniffled, rolling his eyes. "You're so dramatic and you don't make any sense, but. I guess that's kinda sweet of you. Love you, too."
