Many, many years later.
The four had gotten an apartment together shortly after graduation the year prior. Logan and Patton had been together since the end of Sophomore year, when Logan had laughed in front of him and found out Logan knew they were soulmates since third grade and hadn't said a word. For a while, he felt cheated- lied to. But he knew that Logan was just nervous within time, and the two had been practically inseparable since.
Virgil and Roman still had the same relationship as before. Virgil, seeing full color; Roman, thinking his soulmate was dead or something. Sometimes Virgil came close to telling him. He wanted Roman to find out the same way he did, though. Just in a more convenient setting. He'd thought about it a lot. He wanted them to be alone. Somewhere he could be affectionate without feeling embarrassed.
They'd frequently play games together, much like they were doing now. MarioKart. Virgil in the lead. Logan not far behind. Roman a few places behind Logan. And Patton, all the way in last place. He was just having a good time. As the last round finished, Virgil and Logan nearly tying until last minute, when Virgil pulled ahead, and he let out a laugh. Not a real one, not a color-spurring one, just a sort of "Haha, I won, you lost." kind of laugh.
"I win AGAIN! Suck my DI-"
"VIRGIL!" Patton would quickly interrupt, putting a hand over his friend's mouth. "Your language!" Roman let out a quiet giggle- he always thought it was funny when Patton scolded Virgil for his profane speaking mannerisms. Every other word out of the pale boy's mouth was a swear, something vulgar.
"What are you laughing at, Prince Schadenfreude?" Virgil retorted the second Patton's hand was removed, in his blunt tone. The nickname only got confused glances from Roman and Patton, but a soft smirk from Logan. He'd thought it clever, but also knew that the other two wouldn't get it. "You just wasted good material." He said, tsking softly.
"Ugh, okay, this is gonna take the sting off it, but 'schadenfreude' is German for happiness at the misfortune of others. 'Cause you were laughing at me getting yelled at." A soft 'Ohhh' would come out the other two's mouths, Patton would giggle softly, and Roman would quickly attempt to defend himself. "I wasn't taking pleasure in your misfortune! I find Patton's playful and child-like behavior cute. That's all." "Yeah, sure." Virgil would respond, getting up and going to the kitchen.
"Anyone want anything?" He'd ask, getting three 'No's in reply. He walked through the small hallway into the kitchen, not realizing he'd been followed.
