back to present time (before the time skip)!
Bea
I cast a forlorn glance in the direction of my calendar. The marked out dates were nearing the end of September, which meant my journalism project was going to be due soon. The only people I could do my project on were Anna, Sam, Percy, Jax, and Rin, which meant I needed to find time in the next couple of weeks to discover their greatest fears.
Professor Snow was a strict teacher, but I kind of understood why she made her hardest project the first; she wanted to weed out those who were not serious about journalism. She made sure to give us smaller projects too, and I had finally finished them.
Now that I had the time to truly focus on the main project of this year, I was in a panic. Greatest fears? When Professor Snow went into greater detail about the project, she told us that we could leave the people we were interviewing as anonymous, or give them pseudonyms. This was to protect their identities.
Of course, this meant that the students could make up stories, but then are they truly fit to be a good journalist? If I was going to do this project, I wanted to give it my all and not cheat myself.
When I was younger, Jax and I used to play around and envision our futures. Jax would always change her occupation whenever we fooled around, but I had it set in my heart that I would be a journalist. My mother would tell us stories of our beautiful grandmother, who would travel the world and report tragedies and fortunes alike.
My mother always got this sad look in her eyes when she spoke of our grandmother. Jax and I never knew what caused our grandparents to reject our parents, and why they hated us so. As a child, I wanted to do whatever I could to get rid of that sadness, so I would always interview her with an old paper towel roll as a microphone.
"What are you doing, Mama?"
I was suddenly airborne.
"Making sandwiches for the best little girls in the world!"
Shivering, I shook my head and focused. The project.
My phone buzzed. "Anna?"
"Bea! Are you busy?"
"Nope! What's up?"
"Do you want to hang out with Sam and I tonight?"
I flopped onto my bed, humming. "What do you have in mind?"
Anna snorted. "As if you're busy. We're thinking of going on a midnight adventure. Come outside the dorm at 11:52pm on the dot." Click.
I chuckled and closed my eyes. There was no point in stressing about the past, or the future. All I could do was try my hardest on the project and hope for the best.
At exactly 11:52pm, I heard a light tap on the door and opened it to be greeted with Anna's bright smile.
"Sam said something came up, so it's just you and me! Ready?" She offered her arm.
Taking it, I mock curtseyed. "Of course."
Anna led me outside and I zipped up my jacket. The air held a bit of chill, but I couldn't help but feel refreshed. I sighed. Perhaps the outdoors could clear my mind.
Anna turned with a grin. "It's lovely out here, isn't it?" I nodded in silent agreement.
There's something eerie, yet relaxing, about being outside in the middle of the night. The neighborhoods are silent, and the world seems to be resting in limbo. You could easily lose track of time and get lost in the galaxy above.
