Thomas won his first track meet no problem. Except for that moment that he caught Newt sitting in the bleachers cheering him on and he stumbled ever so slightly.
The sight of the blonde haired boy set butterflies in his stomach like he hadn't felt before and Thomas seriously began to worry about himself, but he pushed those worries deep down inside.
After the meet, Thomas walked to the boy's locker room with Newt, his heart pounding erratically as the other boy praised him. Thomas tried to pretend that it was because he had just been running but it was becoming harder for him to pretend the more time he spent with Newt.
After Thomas put everything away and changed, the two boys walked out the doors leading to the small courtyard in the centre of the school where three hallways formed a small triangle that allowed the night sky to show.
“minho said to meet him here” Thomas said, confused as he checked his phone. The courtyard was dark and deserted.
“Okay, okay.” Newt seemed stressed. “My phones almost dead, where the hell is he?”
It was a warm Friday night and Thomas still felt a chill of unease. He and Newt turned at the sound of the door clicking shut and locking. Gally stood smirking in the deserted school, mouthing, “that's for Ben”
Newt immediately began to panic. He checked his phone again, his battery was almost gone and thomas’s phone was completely dead now.
Newt tried to call Minho, but he didn’t pick up.
Newt pulled on the door even though he knew it would be futile.
“We're bloody locked in. I'm going to kill Gally,” growled Newt, tugging on the doors. It looked as if Newt was going to have a mental breakdown as he paced back and forth in the small enclosed courtyard. “Both our phones are dead and we can't contact anyone.”
“Hey Newt,” Thomas said, trying to sound soothing. “Hey buddy it's going to be okay.”
“You don't know that!” Newt almost shouted.
“Hey don't worry Minho will come find us in the morning, I know he will.”
Thomas was now very worried that the boy in front of him was going to have an absolute come apart. He was hyperventilating now, almost in tears and muttering to himself. “I hate it here, I can't be here.”
Suddenly he whirled on Thomas. “This is your fault. I'm here because of you.”
Thomas felt like he had been slapped in the face.
“Newt I'm sorry…” he trailed off.
“Oh you're sorry? That changes everything.” Newt have a derisive laugh.
“Newt you need to calm down.” Thomas immediately regretted those words.
“Do you want to know how i ended up with this limp?” Newt said suddenly, shoving his face angrily into thomas’s. “Do you really want to know?”
Thomas said nothing, he just let the boy talk.
“I tried to kill myself, jumped off that wall right there,” he continued, gesturing almost violently at a wall across the deserted courtyard, his eyes getting stormier the longer he talked.
Thomas felt as though he had been punched in the stomach, he wanted to reach out to Newt, to hug him, to hold him.
“I hate it here. And now I'm locked in, looking at the reminder of everything. Because of you.” Newt poked Thomas in the chest.
“And these bruises. These bruises. Don’t even get me started.”
“Newt,” started Thomas.
“They don’t just show up,” he said quietly.
Newt finally slid down to the floor, head rested in his hands, elbow propped on his knee, looking defeated.
Thomas sat next to him silently.
“I'm sorry.” He finally whispered.
Newt turned to look at him.
“I'm sorry, Newt, I didn't know.”
“Yeah tommy, no one did.” Newt gave a small, bitter laugh.
Thomas looked at the boy next to him and felt an overwhelming urge to kiss him. That familiar sensation he had felt but denied many times before.
They were so close. So close.
Thomas reached out and brushed the cut on Newt's cheek, and then, no longer able to stop himself, Thomas pulled Newt's face to his, and pressed his lips to the blond haired boy's.
Newt didn't resist. Thomas felt the boy melt into him.
It was a soft, gentle kiss, full of Newt's tears. And Thomas could taste Newt's sadness. He pulled away and looked at Newt. His expression was slightly shocked, but not displeased.
They stared at each other, not sure what to say or do after that. Thomas stared straight ahead, worried that if he looked back at Newt, he would be gone or disgusted and mad. He could not believe he had kissed Newt. And that, if he wasn't mistaken, Newt had kissed him back.
Maybe he was dreaming, this was so bizarre. Thomas pinched his hand discreetly, and it hurt.
Next to him, the blonde haired boy let out a small sigh and then leaned his head on Thomas's shoulder.
Thomas sat very still, worried that if he moved, Newt would leave. Very tentatively, Thomas leaned his cheek on the top of Newt's head.
They sat like that for a while in the dark courtyard.
By the first rays of morning, Newt had fallen asleep leaned against Thomas.
Thomas ached from holding the position, but he stayed.
The sound of a lock being turned and a door being shoved open woke Newt with a start, making Thomas jump.
“Where is Gally. I'm going to kill him myself.” Minho stepped out, shouting. “Are you two okay?”
The two boys looked at each other and then back to Minho and nodded.
“I'm still gonna kill him.”
The two boys smiled and followed Minho to his car, fingers brushing ever so slightly behind his back.
