Ok so basically this is the reason to why the elves build with so much crystal. (well... besides the fact that it's sparkly)
The elves use crystal to hold the light that powers everything, kinda like solar panels but prettier! Especially in Atlantis since there is no sunlight, they put panels on the top Of buildings to reflect the lights they have at the top of the dome (as said in the photo).
