Chapter 2

Bella's POV

"Bella!" Charlie exclaimed happily with open arms, ready to hug me. I smiled back at him and embraced him.

"Awww, Dad it's been so long." I complained with a grin.

Rain started to fall and Charlie ushered me into the house. Everything was how I remembered it; the sofa over there, the TV right there, so on so forth. It was nice and warm too, not that it mattered anyway- ghosts don't need heat or cool, but I suppose Charlie had some human guests over now and then.

"So Bella, how's everything in Pheonix?" He asked with genuine interest.

"Meh, sunny." I stated. He cringed; when ghosts go into the sun we don't scream "ahh the light" and vanish, it's just a bit painful.

"Well that's rather unpleasant. I don't know how you and Renée did it." Charlie mumbled, almost to himself.

"Well it wasn't easy." I assured him.

"Anyway, are you excited about school tomorrow?" Charlie sarcasticly enthused. I groaned. Hey, don't get me wrong school is great but it gets boring after going to it for just over a century.

He chuckled at my reaction. "Oh well, that's too bad."

"Huh. Well I'm going upstairs to unpack." I said as I marched past him, and tripped on the leg of a chair. He laughed again and I huffed grabbing my suitcase, turning into my ghosty self and flying upstairs.

Edward's POV

My mind was burning with horrible and disgusting thoughts. Everyone in my family were upstairs in their bedrooms, making love. I wanted to be sick. I tried to tune out all of their thoughts, without sucess. I was on my knees, wallowing in disgust and despair at the same time. In the midst of everyone's thoughts, I heard my own mind scream at me- "Go. Get out of here. Now." I dragged my self across the floor to the coffee table where the keys to my Volvo were already waiting. I grabbed them, pulled myself off the floor and bolted out the door. I wanted to forget all of those disturbing thoughts and images, but they had already been engraved into my memory forever.

The car purred to life and I backed out of the driveway on to the soft dirt road. Sometimes having a mind reading gift has it's disadvantages, and that was one of them. Other times it was really handy; no one could lie to me. More questions came to my mind. Why didn't I have a mate? Someone I could love for eternity? Was that too much to ask?

I was driving past Chief Swan's house. He was the head of the police force in Forks and he really loved his job. The weird thing about Chief Swan was that he didn't have a scent. I had never met him in person so I haven't had a chance to examine him up close but it is really strange because even vampires have scents.

Surprisingly, I almost swerved into a tree when I read his thoughts;

Ah, Bella. Still klutzy as ever even after all these years.

I parked a little way along the street. Bella Swan. I knew a girl when I was human, her name was Isabella Swan. There was no way this Bella was the Isabella I knew so long ago. Even though my human memories are faint, I still remember her dying. I had the pain inflicted on my existence of watching someone close to my heart stop breathing. I had the pain of watching Isabella's motionless body- a corpse- lying in the hospital bed. Maybe this Bella was an ancestor. Besides, her father's name was Carlos not Charlie.

I shrugged it off and started the car again. Hopefully everyone will be in a state of dress when I get back.

Bella's POV

I was reading a book (as my unpacking was done thanks to my ghost speed) and then my super hearing picked up the sound of a car- a Volvo from the sound of it- screech to a halt a little way down the street. After 30 seconds the Volvo started again, turned around and headed back down the street. Meh. It was probably some human finding out that the Lock Ness Monster was their cousin. Hey, it happens. I was friends with a ghost who found out she was the daughter-in-law of the Abominable Snow Man.

The main thought on my mind was I have school tomorrow. I have school tomorrow. Oh man. School, bummer. I talked to Charlie for most of the night, and read some books for the rest. I got ready in the morning and walked out to my truck. Ok school, here I come.
