I Held My Breath

Dan's POV

"Hi, Daniel. It's great to see you. How about we examine you and see how much you're dilated." Dr.Ellen suggests with and I vigorously nod my head.She asks me to spread my legs and I do so.

"Wow, ten centimeters already!"
She exclaims with what sounds like joy. "I'll go get everyone ready. Phil, put on these hospital scrubs. I'll be back in a jiffy." She leaves. Phil leaves to put on the scrubs. I'm left alone in the room with my thoughts.

I rub my belly as the baby starts to kick roughly and another contraction starts. The pain is at its worst and no one is here to comfort or help me. It sounds selfish, but I need someone here. Not long after I start to panic, Phil, the doctor, along with about five nurses walk in.

"Alright, Daniel. On the count of three, I'm going to need your to hold your breath for ten seconds. During those ten seconds, you'll need to push for as long as you can." Dr.Ellen says to me.

"Okay." I say. She probably didn't even hear me. I was so quiet, the sound was barely a whisper. Phil holds my hand.

"Squeeze when you have to." He mumbles, kissing me on the forehead. "You can do this, bear. I know you can."

I held my breath and pushed. I pushed and pushed and pushed. I screamed and cried and squeezed my boyfriend's hand. I received reassuring squeezes back and, after two hours of just pushing, with one final excruciatingly painful push accompanied by a scream, I felt my baby slide out and kick my thigh.

                 "It's a girl!"

"She's beautiful, bear." Phil whispers.

"She's so tiny..." I whisper back.

Phil walks away from me, and I almost pass out. Right before I lose all consciousness, I see Phil walking toward me with a pink bundle.

Then everything fades to black.
