"Twy," he says, and my heart jumps a little. Everyone calls me Twy, but it sounds different coming from him—sweeter somehow. Is it because I love him?

"Yes," I finally answer, trying to keep my voice steady.

"You can stay with me." His eyes are pleading, full of something I can't quite name. Regret? Hope? Either way, I'm not giving in.

"I know," I nod, lips pressed tight. "But I'll stay with Jack."

"Why?" His voice cracks slightly as he shakes his head.

"Why?" I frown, confused.

"Why are you doing this to me?" His gaze pierces right through me, intense and unrelenting.

"Doing what? Why are you pretending to care so much? Pretending Jack is some monster? If he is, then you left me with him. So what does that say about you?" I exhale sharply.

"Why are you making this such a big deal? I came back—that should mean something."

"Oh, so noble of you." I point at his chest. "You thought he might hurt me and that it would be your fault? Wow, how kind. So glad to know your heart still functions."

"It does," he says, stepping closer. "Want me to show you how?"

"Maybe," I roll my eyes. I regret saying it instantly.

"Perfect. Remember, you said yes." He stands and suddenly scoops me over his shoulder like some caveman.

"Kyle! Put me down!" I'm too tired to deal with this.

"Nah." He tosses some money on the table and rubs my butt. "Good girl."

I smack his back hard. "Don't you dare touch me."

He laughs, then wraps his arm around my legs. "Chill, I'm protecting you."

"I said put me down." My head falls against his back, exhausted.

More laughter. "Stop hitting me, psycho."

"I won't stop. Let me go—I'm not going with you."

He doesn't answer.

"Kyle?"

"Yeah?"

"I will not go with you. Got it?"

"Even if I'm taking you to Jack's place?"

"Put me down first! And why are you carrying me anyway?"

We finally reach his car. He opens the door, tosses me in, and slides in next to me.

"Kyle, are you crazy? Like, honestly. Do you take meds or just go to therapy? I won't tell anyone."

He doesn't answer. His face hardens.

"I just want you to stop talking," he says coldly, then adds, "my babe," as if that makes it okay. His hand slides over mine.

I yank my hand away.

He glances at me, startled.

Good. Let him feel confused for once.

The car stops in front of a sleek, modern house with a massive garden and a pool.

"Where are we?" I ask, eyeing him suspiciously.

"My new home," he says, hopping out.

What?! He lied. He was never taking me to Jack.

He opens my door, but I don't budge.

"Hey?" He waves his hand in front of my face.

I look away.
