Kyle paid for the dress, and we left the store. I still can't believe what he did inside.
"You liked it, right?" he asked as we headed to the car.
"I do. Uhm, I just didn't like what you did," I said awkwardly.
"And what did I do? Any guy would've done more than that." He looked me up and down. "Lucky me," he muttered.
Oh my God. I wanted to cry—maybe from happiness? I wasn't sure. My feelings were all tangled. He always made me uneasy.
"But you liked it? I mean, the dress?"
"Twyla, all I can think about is how I'll resist you the rest of the day." He shook his head. Oh my God, he always made me blush.
"Thank you. I mean, thank you for the dress." I slid into the car.
"No need. You'll pay for the rest of the day," he shrugged and started the engine.
"What?" I rolled my eyes, and he just chuckled.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked innocently.
"Wait for it."
Kyle was honestly my dream man. Everything that could attract me to someone was in him.
"Kyle, I love you," I said without thinking.
"I know." He nodded, so arrogant.
"What about you?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I'm in love with you. I think my feelings run deeper."
"I know." I nodded, smiling softly. "I know you love me."
"Too confident?" He smirked.
"Yes, just like you." I rolled my eyes.
"Such a kid." He chuckled.
Suddenly, a car appeared right in front of us.
"Oh my God!" I screamed. Kyle slammed on the brakes, but it was too late—we crashed.
"Are you okay?" was the last thing I remembered hearing.
When I opened my eyes, I looked around. No one was there. I was in an empty room. It was dark, and I could see the cannula in my hand.
"What's going on?" I yelled.
A nurse came in.
"You had an accident two days ago," she said, checking my blood pressure, which seemed normal.
"Two days ago??? Where is Kyle?"
"Kyle? I don't know. No one came with you." She shrugged and left.
"Don't leave me!" I shouted, but she was gone.
"Twyla."
"Twyla."
"Don't leave me." I opened my eyes to see Kyle staring at me.
"Was it a nightmare?" he asked.
"Yes, I think so," I said, trying to piece things together.
"I'm here with you. I won't leave you, honey," Kyle assured me. Yet, I didn't know why I felt such hatred toward him—as if he really had abandoned me in the hospital.
"It felt so real, oh my God." I took a shaky breath. "Kyle, will you ever leave me?" He'd already answered that question, but I needed to hear it again.
"You're not sure?" He knit his eyebrows. I knew he probably thought I was crazy now.
"I'm sure. But I get nightmares. It's not the first time, by the way. I had one before—you forgot my name." I stared at my hands. Why was I saying this now? He was taking me out, and everything seemed fine—I hated how I ruined every good moment. I hated myself.
"Forgot your name?" He chuckled. "I'm not that old." He shook his head.
"That's not what I mean. You mistook my name," I blinked. "Like I'm not important to you."
"I think you need to cover yourself well before you sleep," he teased.
"I don't want to be silly and ruin this moment for us." I looked away from his gaze.
"No, honey. Never mind. You already did," he laughed.
"One last question—do you really love me?"
"One last question—do I look like I don't?"
"No jokes." I shook my head.
"Twyla, I want to marry you. Do you understand that or not? You're too good for me. I don't know why you..." He stopped.
"I what?" I stared into his eyes, waiting.
"You're not confident in yourself. Why do you always doubt my love? Twyla, if I didn't love you, I wouldn't have asked to marry you. Marriage isn't my thing. You know how many times my mom told me to marry some girl her friends know? Marriage used to seem so far away from me. I never thought I'd be a husband or a dad. You taught me so much. The most important thing you taught me is how to love. The way you love your parents amazed me. I never loved my parents like you love yours. I learned so much from you—how to be a good person, how to be human."
I stared into his adorable eyes as he spoke. His glossy eyes made me melt. I loved him.
"Maybe I thought I'd never date someone like you. Actually, you were so far away from me. You drank, stayed up all night, had girls. You did everything I never would—and never will do." I took a breath. "And with all that, I loved you. I loved you so much. You made me break my rules. Well, not all of them—but still." I looked away. "I still remember it all as if it were yesterday."
"But there's one very important rule you never broke." He looked at me with lust in his eyes. Oh my God. What did he mean? He's such a tease.
"If I didn't break it, then I won't." I said, blushing and looking away. I didn't want him to see.
"Will you marry me now?" He snapped me out of my thoughts.
I just smiled awkwardly.
"Twyla, I can't help it. I thought I could wait, but no. I want you."
"I told Mom and—"
"Tell them the wedding is today." He handed me his phone.
"Are you crazy?" I asked.
"Yes." Kyle touched my hands.
