If You Shall

47 3 2

leave

if you shall leave

but please

don't sit there

on the pavement

with your head in your hands

crying out

for a broken one

speaking softly

to yourself

and tapping your knee

against your hand

stay

if you shall stay

and let the words come out

or sweep the letters under the table

and wait for the passing of the rain

but I'd rather

you'd make up your mind

for as soon as the ashes dance

across your tongue

our hearts begin to beat as one

until the firemen come

and lead you away
