"Brandon, it's just a baby," I said, reaching out to grab the little black cat. "Aww." I pet it repeatedly.
"Well, you're not going to aww when it grows up and eats us all," Brandon deadpanned and I glared at him while Amelia laughed in the back.
"But maybe if we take care of it and feed it, it'll be our friend," Amelia piped in and Brandon groaned, shaking his head.
"You girls are nuts! It's a fucking Jaguar," he argued as Amelia took the baby out of my hand and began petting it to sleep.
"Besides, how are we going to feed it if we can't feed ourselves?" Brandon asked and I pursed my lips in thought.
"We'll figure it out." I waved it off.
"Are you going to stay like this bro?" Nick snapped his fingers in front of Aiden's face who was still laying down on his back.
"Nick, I swear my heart is still beating out of my chest." Aiden closed his eyes and Nick placed his hand on his chest.
"Oh shit, you're not exaggerating!" Nick exclaimed and pulled his hand back. He stood up, "Guys, I think we're staying here for the night."
"Next to the river?" Jett asked and Nick nodded his head. "I don't think it's a good idea."
"Why not?" Kenric raised an eyebrow. "We'll be sleeping by the river where we could drink as much water as we like, two of us could go hunting and we'll build a fire. Easy peasy."
"Yeah, it isn't going to be easy peasy when we have predators hot on our heels," Jett argued and everyone brushed it off.
"Guys seriously-"
"Stop being paranoid, Jett," Nick interrupted him.
Jett nodded and went over to Aiden. "Can I take your bow and arrow?" he asked but took them before Aiden could even answer.
I watched as he made his way to a tall tree and sat down with his back pressed against it. "I'm keeping watch then."
"Jett, you won't stay up all night," Adriel said, taking a seat next to him. "But I'll keep you company." She smiled and he flashed her his pearly whites gratefully.
"Me too." Lauren slid down and soon everyone was gathered around Jett except for Nick who was talking to a very sleepy Aiden.
"It's still afternoon, you can't sleep right now," Nick stated and Aiden just chuckled, his eyes involuntarily closing.
"Nick leave him alone." I poked the side of his head and his laughter rang in my ears as he got to his feet.
"I'm doing you a favor and annoying him!" he exclaimed and I giggled.
"Actually no. You'd be doing me a favor by letting him go to sleep," I said and he clutched his stomach as he fought against fits of laughter.
The sight of him laughing like that brought an unwanted smile to my face.
