The group ran through the dark, the torches barely making a difference. Yells and screeches rang out from behind them. Leo followed Firewing through the tunnel. Suddenly, she came to a halt.
"Son of a bitch!" she yelled. The screaming came closer. She had stopped in front of two tunnels. Fire turned around and pushed past everyone. She could just make out black specks of the demons who were coming after them.
It's me they want. She said to herself. She ran to the entrance of the cavern they were in and grabbed her sword.
"Drathkindra!" She yelled, and the sword lite up in a blueish light.. She smashed the blade into the rock wall just as the demons made their way into the light. The wall came tumbling down on top of four spiders and the tunnel was sealed.
She ran back over to the group. Reaching behind her head, Leo saw her make a jerking motion with her right had. She brought it back around to reveal a thin golden feather. She handed it to him.
"Take this and run." She instructed. She looked up at the two openings to the tunnels. One had a series of markings. " The artifact should be that way! Go! And if you run into a Centrious before I find you, and you have no other option, break the feather in half, throw it and find cover. It will work like a bomb." She said. "Now go." She pointed to the tunnel with runes marking the top.
" What about you?" Foragie asked.
"It's me they are after. I killed their kind. Now go get the artifact!" As she spoke a boom came from the rocks and then they shook. Then another.
Fire reached down and grabbed a dagger and slid the blade over her wound on her chest. Then she whipped the blood away onto her hand. "Run!" She yelled. All Leo could do was watch as she ran down the other tunnel, whipping her hand across the wall. Then she disappeared into the darkness.
Leo and the others continued to run down the tunnel in which they were told.
" How far do you think it is?" Mikey asked Leo.
"I'm not sure." He replied. The tunnel was silent except for the sounds of the group's footsteps. He couldn't believe what Fire had done. Suddenly, he saw an opening to a huge cavern. He entered and it seemed like a cathedral.
The ceiling of the cavern was far over their heads and could not be see. A blue light came from an underground river that seemed to lead to nowhere. Torches lined the walls giving off a golden light as well. The water circled around a giant boulder which, placed on top, was a box containing the artifact. The light in the room was enough to extinguish the torches.
"Let's get the box and go back and help Fire." Foragie said, stepping into the cave all the way. But as his foot touched the rock floor, and echo rang out and then a screech from far off. The walls of the cavern were covered in tunnel entrances big enough for three people to stand side by side. Leo reached over and snatched Foragie by the shoulder and pulled him back into the darkness.
"Fire said there was more demons." Leo hissed at the man. "I think you just woke them up."
Foragie looked around and saw nothing. He shoved Leo's hand away and walked back out into the cavern.
"Then where are they?" He asked. "Fire is out there risking her life for us, we need to hurry."Foragie said. "She may have been mistaken."
It did seem true. The cavern was completely abandoned. But what about that screech they heard?
