Chapter 15

Leonardo followed Firewing up the side of one of the small mountains. As they gor higher, Leo could see the island better.

"So... What do I need to do?" Leo asked a ass they came into a clearing from the brush.

"Just hold my feathers. And don't let go unless I tell you otherwise." Her voice was kind like always. How could she manage such a sweet voice after all she's been through? It seemed nearly impossible to Leo.

"Won't it hurt if I hold your feathers?" He asked.

"No. My feathers are much different from others. It takes a lot to rip them out and to make than hurt. They are my armor when in flight."She said with a smile. "If they start to hurt I would tell you."

"Oh." He said. There was so much more he wanted to know about her but it didn't seem like there was enough time. They had to save the world. And they only had one of three artifacts. "And your wounds?"

"They are fine."She said reaching up to brush the wound on her neck. It was no more than a small red spot on the skin.

Finally reaching a good spot on the edge of a cliff,  Fire stopped walking and looked out into the sky above her. "Do you trust me?" She asked in a low voice. "Am I 'trustable'?" Sadness surrounded her words.

"I trust you."Leo said with a smile. He saw the grin creep its across her lips.

"Ready?" She asked.

"Yes."He said.

He turned to watch as her body was suddenly engulfed in flames and her shape changed into the giant bird. Her wings outstretched and shown of flames. She stood straight up, flexing her body to get ready for a flight. Lowering herslef down to Leo she lowered her head almost down to the ground. Get on. She spoke through his mind.

Slowly, Leo climbed onto her. He rested on her back, his leg in front of her wings. He ran his hands through the feathers on her neck, and felt her muscles ripple a little as he felt how soft they were. Ready? She asked.

"Yeah." He said as he took hold of a bunch of her feathers. Suddenly,  his feet were lifted off of the ground and he went higher up. As soon as he looked out off the cliff,  his blood ran cold. " This probably not the best of times to tell you,  but I don't really like heights."He said shyly.

Hmhmhm. Too late to turn back now. Her voice was cheerful. She walked over to the edge of the drop off and leaned off.

Leo shut his eye shut, the adrenalin in his body pulsed quickly. He felt as if his body was dropping. Then, there was nothing.

You will want to open your eyes, or you will miss everything. Fire spoke to him.

Leonardo slowly opened his eyes and took in the surroundings.

"Wow."He said breathless. In the air, they glided down the side of the mountain, just above the trees. The air rushed past Leo's face as they went down.

Suddenly,  Fire took a hard right and flew out onto the ocean. She went low to the water so that she almost touched it. The stars sparkled across the water and the ocean smell tickled Fire's beak. She then tilted her wings up and they flew upward.

You may want to close your eyes right now. She said as they went higher up into the sky. Leo shut his eyes, and held on for dear life. After a few minutes he began to wonder where they were.

Alright.  Open your eyes. She said with cheer. Leo opened his eyes, and looked around. At first he saw nothing but what looked like fog. Then, the emerged from the fog into a starlet sky. We are above the storm clouds. She said. There were more stars up higher than there were down on the ground.

Donny would kill for something like this, Leo thought. They continued to fly when Leo's stomach dropped. The height in which they were at had finally gotten to him when he looked down in a break in the clouds. The island looked nothing more than small speck. He held Fire's feathers even tighter and hugged her with his legs. His stomach began to ache and he felt sick.

Are you alright. Your mood has changed.

"Just feeling a little sick."

Why don't we end this for tonight then. Hold on tight.

Leo held on to her tighter than before and waited. Suddenly,  he watched as she brought her wings in, and they began to fall back to the ground.
