Chapter 15

"Nico!" Aunt Jodi scolded. A few of the nurses left, seeing as they were not needed, but one nurse stayed, tending to Liam's bloody nose. Soon she led him out of the room, just after Liam feebly waved goodbye to me.

"What are you doing here?" I asked Nico, staring at him wide-eyed.

Nico gazed at me for a moment before turning to Aunt Jodi, who was still standing near Nico, bewildered at the events that had just passed.

"When we found out you were sick, I contacted Nico to tell him your situation. The doctors told me it wasn't anything major, but I still wanted to update him. He insisted on coming to see you, and I just picked him up from the airport."

"Oh."

Aunt Jodi stepped back and said, "I'll leave you two alone," and then walked out of the room before I could protest.

"Ella, I'm sorry. I just – "

"You what Nico? You couldn't control yourself because you saw me like this, and you were so mad at Liam for doing this to me? Liam didn't do this. This is my fault."

"How the hell is this your fault? This is one hundred percent his fault; he took you hiking when he should have known full well you couldn't handle it."

"Should have, but he didn't," I argued. "Besides, I should have stopped him."

"That's beside the point Ella. He didn't have the common sense to figure out that you couldn't handle it!"

"Nico, why is it that nothing is ever my fault? I'm just as responsible for things as anyone else. But somehow, you always find a way to blame someone else."

"This isn't your fault and you full well know it."

"Can you please just go? I already have a headache and you're making it worse."

"No, I'm not going to go Ella. Because evidently you can't handle being by yourself, or with that incompetent excuse of a boyfriend. So I'm going to stay, thank you."

"I'll have you removed from this room," I threatened, although I didn't think the doctors would be able to physically move him if he didn't want to go.

"Oh really? And how are you going – "

"Is everything alright in here?" Dr. Samuels asked, walking into the room with a clipboard in hand.

"Nico refuses to leave my side," I whined, shooting daggers in his direction.

"May I talk to you for a moment?" Nico asked politely, flashing Dr. Samuels an award-winning smile while ignoring my protest.

"Of course," she agreed.

They left the room for a few moments and I heard murmurs in the hallway. I couldn't make out what they were saying exactly.

A few minutes later, Dr. Samuels entered the room again.

"What was that about?" I questioned.

"Nico was asking if he could come into surgery with us," Dr. Samuels told me. "Before you get all worked up, I want to explain. He wants to come and watch the surgery because he thinks it will help him further his knowledge in the medical field."

"Come on, that's complete bullshit. He's using that to worm his way into the surgery with me."

"Even so, I definitely think it would benefit him. Now, I told him that you had to make the final decision, because it is ultimately your choice. But I will say that you'd be doing him huge favor, both educationally and peace-of-mind-wise."

I sighed. "Way to guilt me into it. He can do it, as long as he doesn't say a word about it later. Will you tell him exactly that?"

Dr. Samuels smiled. "Sure."

"Okay, are we about ready?" Dr. Samuels said, smiling at me. She turned to Nico, who was wearing similar scrubs to mine. Nico gave me a reassuring grin, and I turned to Dr. Samuels and nodded. I had to admit, I was still slightly angry at Nico, but there was something about him that made me unable to stay mad for long.

"Okay, here we go," Dr. Samuels said as she grabbed a hold of the cot I was lying on. I felt the cot start rolling, and soon I saw the sign to the Surgical Wing draw nearer and nearer, over my head and then it was gone where I could no longer see it.

The smell of antiseptic hit my nose immediately, and I gagged slightly at the scent. Instantly I felt Nico's eyes boring into me, and I looked up for a moment before sheepishly averting my gaze.

We entered a small operating room. I felt myself becoming woozy. Dr. Samuels explained this would happen, but it felt too déjà vu.

"Okay Ella, go to sleep," a female voice said.

"I- No, I can't. I'm going to- It's happening again."

"No Ella," a stern but familiar voice said. "You'll be fine. I'll take care of you."

And that was the last thing I heard before I was out like a light.
