Chapter 14

Actually, Alex was still scared.

It had been three weeks since the 'incident' and he'd still not gone to school under the excuse of 'medical emergency' because he didn't want to see Christine.

Or Elizabeth...

His mind drifted to the next morning after Dr. Dake's death when he woke up and saw his dad at the foot of the bed, staring intently at the window, as if one of those things would burst through it at any moment. His father turned his head and looked directly at him and Alex asked the only question.

"You knew?"

Michael nodded at his son.

"Don't you think it's quite impudent to believe that humans are the only somewhat sentient beings occupying this planet?"

"It killed Dr. Dake..." he shivered
"It-"

"She" Michael interjected.

"No matter what you saw, they are the same people you've known..."

"Yeah, except for the fact that they drink blood and can decapitate a human in seconds."

"There was something a wise person said to me..."
Alex arched an eyebrow.
His dad always said 'a wise person' when he was talking about Alex's mum. So, he kept quiet and let him continue.

"Noah kept two's of every creature that was meant to survive the flood on the ark. That means, everything we see, was meant to be here for a reason."
He rose and fixed his sleeves.

"I'll leave you to think about that."

Now, laying on his bed and staring at the ceiling, he felt ridiculous. He wanted justice for his mum and he got it. Even though the Doctor was dead, the police got proof from an anonymous source (Alex's dad) implicating him in a lot of crimes. His death had been ruled as a professional hit- probably from those he was working with and tried to hide from. Christine didn't even seem interested in killing him and she said something about a... 'tether'? That part was fuzzy.

Besides, he needed to find out who really killed his mother.

And he wanted to see Elizabeth.

His brain was working other theories too, asking questions. If his dad knew that they existed, did his mum know about them too? How was she infected with a disease she was working on to cure. Was she infected deliberately or was it accidental? The doctor also implied that others were infected, were they like his mother or was something else going on? What was going on?

He got out of bed, took a shower and started dressing.

Bobby passed by his door and did a double-take.

"Why are you dressing up?" He asked.

"Going to school. Any other dumb questions?" Alex replied.

"Uhh... okay." He started down the stairs and stopped.

"Hey, wanna go together?" Bobby requested and Alex paused. It just occurred to him. Christine was acting weird, saying he 'compelled' her or whatever. Was that a figure of speech? What was she talking about?

Something else to add to the question board.

"Sure." He said to Bobby.

"I guess hiding never really fixes anything."
