Candy came back from shopping and hurriedly went to freshen up then came to arrange the items she had bought.
Afterwards she prepared dinner..Antony came following the sweet aroma.
"What is cooking?" Antony asked adjusting his tie loosening it.
"Ummm...some mashed potatoes,roasted pork and gravy" she said smiling."its almost done"she said stirring the gravy.
Steve came and placed his coat on the counter"Hey dad!"
"Oh son..I almost forgot.. Tomorrow we'll meet with Bernard and his son to arrange the retirement gala event" he said taking the napkin.
"We should discuss this in private" he said glancing at Candy.
"Oh by the way, Candy you are invited to the gala event. Its in two weeks time" Antony said.
"Dad?" Steve looked at his father angrily.
"No question Steve. So Candy tomorrow you'll need help. I'll call my former cook. Mrs Kristen and will help make some of the dishes. Bernard is diabetic" he said clearing his throat.
"So...what will be the menu for tomorrow Mr Antony?" She asked concerned.
"You better right it down" he handed her a tablet.
"Salmon for Bernard and beef for the rest of us...that is protein,..Brown rice for Bernard and umm..spaghetti bolognese that's for starch..Broccoli and cauliflower for Bernard and as for us we'll have red cabbage there goes the vitamins... Oh balanced diets" Antony explained trying to reason with her with Steve just being blank. He's weird if he doesn't love food. I mean who doesn't love food??
"And what about the starters?" Candy got curious
"We'll have cream of mushroom soup and umm...for dessert..chocolate cake with chocolate cream and because of Bernard well.. We'll have lime and orange juice"
"Tangerine" candy said abruptly.
"Lime and orange" he said smiling.
"Okay I'll make all" Candy laughed.
"Then you'll have the day off"
"Yaaaay" she said dancing.
"Have a goodnight" Antony said"Goodnight son"he said patting his shoulder.
"Can I talk to you?" Steve asked putting his plate on the sink and stood next to her.
"Look...I'm sorry..I got a bit jealous.. Because I...I...don't have a wonderful relationship with my dad and I thought that maybe...
"Maybe what?" She finally spoke up"you think I'd steal him away from you?how could you think that?"she said rinsing off and wiping her hands with the kitchen towel.
"Go to sleep" she said hanging her apron. He then went to his room with a lot of thoughts.
The next day...
Candy is up already making breakfast. The door bell rings as she is almost done. She goes to open the door.
"Hello there" the woman seems surprised.
"Oh hey..umn..I'm Candy ma'am. You must be Mrs Kristen. Come on in." She said moving letting her walk in.
"Ummm...I was just finishing making breakfast"
"Smells delicious.. What were you cooking?"
"I was coating arrowroots with eggs and frying them then made toast. Want some?"
"Yeah sure". She said cleaning her hands
"Coffee or tea?"
"Tea will do for me" she said smiling.
"You know..when Mr Antony said he'd call his former cook I thought it'd be a young lady"
"Mmmh...I have been his nanny a long time since his teenage life. Watched him become the man he is"
"Wow!!that's amazing! They'll be up any time"
"Let's start with the previous preparation. Did he give you the menu?"
"Wow!you know him like a book" candy said happily.
"My young boys A,B and C..but I don't know why they grew apart after they all got families.. They..."
Antony interrupted "Nana Kristen "
"That's my big bog. How you doing son?" She kissed his cheek.
"I'm good. Just a lot of work"
"You're going to retirement pretty early don't you think?"
"Weell...." He sipped his coffee"I've invested enough"
"You're a wise man. Hoping Steve will learn from your steps"
"I don't know" he sighs"I've made mistakes too"he looked down.
"We'll talk when I'm done. Make sure to eat enough. You know how Bernard is with stories" they laughed.
"I'll see you then" he left.
"They must be great friends with your children then" Candy said
"Well...I don't have children of my own... Long story cut short..I have cervical cancer...I was diagnosed after my wedding.. One month after..." She tried to control her tears but they betrayed her and fell down her wrinkled skin.
"I'm so sorry ma'am... I didn't mean to..." Candy apologized.
"Grandma Kristen!!!" Steve exclaimed surprising them.
