"Look at the power of Nia Jax!" the announcer's hollers excitedly as Nia tosses the blonde female wrestler, Dana Brooke, onto her shoulders. You watched the match from backstage, praying Nia would win. Nia drops Dana with her signature 'Samoan Drop' which honors her heritage.
"One," the ref hits the mat, "Two," Another time. You dig your nails into your palm in anxiety.
"Three!" you jump up at this, pumping your fists in delight. You quickly sit down, embarrassed by your emotional outburst.
I should go congratulate Nia... You think to yourself. However, you dismissed the thought. Why would she even care about what you think? She's so much better than you in every way. You sigh, knowing that you are only subpar compared to someone like her.
Kalisto walks in the locker room and gives a slap on the back.
"Hey (y/n), how's it going?" the masked luchador asks.
"Not great."
"Why so?" Kalisto asks you, sitting down on a bench.
"I want to congratulate Nia on her match but I'm too nervous to do that."
Kalisto nods, "Give it a shot. I forever grateful that I decided to speak up during certain moments. Don't be shy (y/n)."
You smile, "Thanks Lucha Dragon, I'll keep that in mind."
Kalisto gives a thumbs up to you. "No problem, us highflyers have to stick together."***
Nia smiles as she walks away from the cheering crowd. A feeling of triumph filled her. She loved the crowd; they're so special to her. The people she worked with are so supportive and very encouraging. Nia made her way to backstage.
You take a deep breath, trying to calm your heart beat. Congratulate Nia. Should be easy... Right? What if I mess up? What if I-
Your thoughts were cut short as you turn a corner, bumping into someone.
"I-I'm so sorry! I didn't mean-" you cut your nervous ramble, realizing the person you hit.
"Nia?" Oh lord...
"That's me," she says with a grin.
"Good match you had out there," you whisper out, nibbling at your lip.
"Thanks (y/n). I enjoy your matches too." Nia replies, a small smile spreading on her face.
Your eyes light up, looking down in embarrassment. "R-really? Wow... That means so much to me."
"Just speaking my mind. You're pretty amazing, you know that?" Nia pats your shoulder.
You blush a little, sheepishly chuckling. "Hehe, it's nothing compared to what you do. I'm just average."
"You're a great highflyer, I admire your innovative moveset." Nia wraps her arm you as buddies would.
"Kalisto was right about voicing your thoughts..." you think out loud.
Nia laughs at this, shaking her head. "Kalisto's such a nice guy. You should tag with sometime." Nia extends her hand, "Imagine how the crowd would go if you followed Kalisto's Salida Del Sol with your perfect Phoenix Splash."
The way Nia says 'perfect' makes you feel all giddy and happy.
"Y-yeah, maybe I should. That would be a pretty good idea," you say with a small, shy, smile."Or, you could tag with me in mixed gender. That would also be very interesting."
Your eyes widen at this. "I could never do that-"
"Why not?" Nia says bluntly.
You stop and ponder the question for a moment, then shrugging at her. "I don't know... I guess a lack of confidence I suppose."
"Have faith in yourself (y/n), you're a good man. I'm sure if you stuck up for yourself, you'd get plenty of good opportunities." Nia gives you a warm hug.
"Maybe you're right. I should stick up for myself."
"I supposed that's the right thing to do." Nia nods at your words.
***
Over the past few days, you have a few wrestling matches with a little more significance and length to them. Listening to Nia's advice really did help you quite a lot.
Maybe I should get an intergender tag team match with her... You smile at the thought of this; it would be a big honor.
Strutting to Vince's office you begin to feel a sense of doubt creeping up on you once again. With a deep breath, you walk onwards, forcing yourself to be brave.
