"Chase have you seen Ev?" Marshall asked, leaning in the doorway to Caspin's stall. Chase was saddling up the bay gelding but looked up to his best friend, who's family shared the ranch with his.
"You'll see her in three, two, one..." the sound of hooves on the concrete floor echoed as a leggy grey gelding trotted his way in. Well, he was supposed to be grey. In actual fact, he was a murky brown. A redheaded girl strode in hot on his tail.
"I swear Evander, cleaning you will be the death of me." She groaned, gently tugging his halter and leading him into a stall. Chase let out a chuckle as Marshall walked to talk to his girlfriend.
"At least mud blends in with your coat, hey boy?" He scratched Caspin between his ears and led him out by the reigns.
"See y'all later." He said to his friends as he walked out into the warm sunshine.
The two took a steady walk around the trail that surrounded the grounds. Chase gave a quick look over his and Marshall's parent's horses while he was out. He could feel that his steed wanted to run and smiled, patting his neck as they came to the last field on their property. As usual, this was empty.
"Good boy. Come on, let's go." Chase gave a nudge with his heels which immediately sent the bay beast into a steady canter around the field. The brunette flicked his gaze to the neighbouring field that belonged to the small cottage, just within eyesight. That house had been empty for as long as he remembered so it surprised him to see a palomino stood with its head over the fence, watching him and his horse with interest. He slowed Caspin to a walk and slowly approached the fence.
"Swift!" A voice made both Chase and Caspin spook a little but it took the boy a split second to soothe his horse to his usual calm state. The palomino turned his head and looked in the direction of the voice. Chase followed the gaze of the creature and looked for the owner of the voice. His breath caught in his throat when he saw possibly the prettiest girl he had ever seen before. She didn't even notice her neighbor as she stopped and petted her horse. Only when Swift swung his head did she look up and see Chase.
"Hi." She smiled, standing on the bottom rung of the fence with her horse beside her.
"Hey there missy." Chase responded, he cringed at his own voice, knowing how typically western it sounded. Regardless, the girl giggled and smiled up at him.
"I'm Skye, my family just moved here from the city." She explained.
"Chase. My family own the ranch with my best friend's family." He nodded behind him. Caspin flicked his head back and snorted, making both teens laugh. "And this is Caspin."
Skye pet the velvet like muzzle of the bay animal. "Hello Caspin," she giggled. "This is Swift." She pat the shoulder of her own horse.
"Skye! Lunch!" The two heard another female voice come from the cottage. Skye gently took ahold of Swift's halter.
"Well I've gotta go." She sighed. "Maybe I'll see you around."
"There's no maybe about it, I'm your neighbor." Chase chuckled.
"Right. See ya." She turned and led Swift away. Chase sat and watched as the two got smaller and smaller until they rounded a corner, presumably to Swift's stable, before turning and heading back to their own barn.
'Wow.' The brunette thought with a smile on his face. 'Just, wow."
