Twice as nice

This is Andrew:

Looking at himself in the mirror, nervous, excited and...

"Kind of sweaty." Morgan notes and what Andrew meant to be a chuckle came out a lot more forced than was intended. "Still handsome though." Morgan reassures him and he smiles.

"Thanks." He murmurs. "I don't know why I'm so nervous." His hands feel funny when he goes to fix his collar, his outfit is far from formal, but it's the best he has to offer. "What's the worst thing that could happen?"

Anything could happen, really. He could trip and fall in front of everyone, but he suspects no one would laugh at him, well not really. Worst things could probably happen too, but he doesn't want to think about those right now.

"It's just I don't want him to think that I'm proposing to him for the sake of it. I don't want to marry him because it's the next step to take in a long term relationship. I want to be married to him because I want to be married to him."

"I know that." Morgan says. "He knows that and he loves you and he'll be happy to spend the rest of his life with you."

Andrew laughs a little and turns to her. "Sorry for freaking out."

"No, don't be sorry! This is big, so you're allowed to freak out a little, but it's going to be fine, you'll see. Even if he says no, that doesn't mean you have to break up, right?"

"Right, but I really hope he says yes."

"So do I." Morgan says. "It's going to be fine."

Andrew takes a deep breath. He's ready.

Meanwhile, this has been Garrett:

Looking at himself in the mirror, fixing his hair with the biggest smile on his face.

"I never knew you were a nervous laugher." Ryland says.

"I think he is nervous everything right now, coming for Andrew's brand. He would be doing backflips right now if he didn't want to keep his suit wrinkle-free." Shane laughs.

"And if I was physically able to. What do you think?" Garrett asks as he tilts his head to the side so they can both take a good look at him.

"It looks great." Shane tells him. "There's nothing to worry about."

"He's right." Ryland says. "It's gonna be great."

"I still don't know where to do it." Garrett says. "I can't do it in the house because that's boring. Where do we go? Hey, Andrew, do you wanna take a walk even though we never take walks because we are dead tired all the time, I feel like today is the day to start doing that. I have no ulterior motive other than to watch the sunset with you, I swear."

"That actually sounds pretty nice, if you try and say it like a normal person and not sarcastically." Shane says.

"It's time for you to go." Ryland tells him.

"Alright. Wish me luck." Garrett says as he takes a deep breath and then walks out the door.

And so, this is them:

Sitting next to each other, having their simple dinner. Andrew doesn't know if it's just him, but Garrett looks extra handsome tonight and he probably feels Andrew's nervous energy because he looks quite jittery himself. They live together, they see each other every day, but tonight feels different. Whenever their gazes meet, Garrett is smiling and Andrew can't help but smile in return, so happy to be with him.

There is a stretch of silence when they are done eating and it's not entirely awkward, but Andrew finds that he doesn't want to still anymore.

"Do you wanna go out for a bit?" He asks and Garrett gives him a blank look for a moment before he lets out a little laugh.

"Sure." He replies. "Let's go..."

And they both head outside.

Andrew takes Garrett's hand when they are out of the building and they walk in silence for a moment. They usually stay in when they have time alone, away from the noise of life in their home, but this is nice—just walking side by side as Andrew tries to work up the courage to ask Garrett the question.

“Hey,” he says in the end, and Garrett stops and looks at him with a little smile. “I need to tell you something, or ask you something, rather. Well, a bit of both, actually,” he says, and Garrett's smile grows.

“Yeah?” he prompts, and Andrew takes a deep breath.

“I’m not entirely sure I’m gonna do this properly, but… I love you,” he says. “I love you, and I love being with you, living with you. I know this might be out of nowhere, because it hasn’t been that long, but… He takes the velvet box out of his pocket, and his heart skips a beat when he sees Garrett's jaw drop when he lays eyes on it. “I love you, Garrett,” he says, and briefly wonders if saying it three times is too much in such a short speech, “and I hope you know that spending the rest of my days with you is the best way to ensure that I die the happiest man in the universe.”

Garrett takes a shaky breath, eyes still on the box. When he looks up, his eyes are teary, and Andrew has a small moment to panic before Garrett reaches into his own pocket.

“This was what I have for you.” he says, voice shaky, and he opens his box to reveal a gold ring.

Andrew lets out a surprised laugh and shakes his head a little. “This—you wanted to—tonight?”

“Tonight,” Garrett confirms with a grin, and when he laughs, the tears spill over. “Holy smokes, Andrew…” he whispers and leans in, and their lips meet in a kiss that is just as joyous as it is desperate.

“I don’t believe this,” Andrew mumbles. “I don’t believe this!”

Garrett holds him closer and buries his face in his neck. He shudders for a moment, relieved, and Andrew pulls away to look at him again, his own eyes stinging with tears.

He clears his throat. “You never actually said yes,” he points out, and takes Garrett's hand in his own.

“Neither did you,” Garrett teases with a smile.

Andrew smiles back. “Will you marry me?”

“Only if you marry me first,” Garrett replies, and Andrew shakes his head a little, bites his lip against the grin that has his cheeks hurting. Garrett slides the ring on Andrew's finger and pulls him closer again to give him another kiss.

“I love you,” Garrett whispers. “I love you. I love you.”

Andrew smiles and holds him close, letting himself sink in the moment and imagine a time when they wouldn’t ever have to let go.
