Supernatural: leapfrogging

The screams were on the cusp of reaching a fever pitch and becoming unbearable. The library floor was already carpeted  in freshly mangled corpses, their eyes burnt to crisp, hollow sockets  encrusted with rings of deadly dried blood. The very sight of those wretched black holes where eyes used to be was enough to force me to bite back vomit. 

Jodie had found us a total of around twenty corpses, most of them men, in fact, around sixty percent of the specimens had been men. Needless to say that so far, none of the offerings had had bodies strong enough to contain Castiel's particular celestial wavelength. 

I hovered for a moment or two in front of Dean's bedroom door, deciding wether or not it was necessary to check up on Cas's progress. Though upon hearing the tones of yet another grotesquely twisted scream from behind the thin wood, I decided that there was no need. 

When Cas finally emerged, the corpses had been whittled down to solely three which remained untouched. Jodie, Alex and Donna had helped me clear the rest of the rejected debris from the library floor, it was not a clean and easy job, but nobody seemed to complain of such things. 

"I'm sorry that this is taking so long, Sam." 

"No, no, not all, Cas, take all the time you need." I answered with a smile

"I'm sorry that I couldn't find options more suited to your needs." Added Jodie, somewhat formally.

"I suppose it can't be helped..." Cas says dismissively. He casts a gloomy eye over his remaining choices, who lie pale and vacantly staring up into the strip lights. I find myself praying that just one of these is a close enough match. "Even if I do find someone suitable within these three, by the looks of them I sincerely doubt their bodies last as long as I would prefer them to..." He sighs, "It's time like these when I truly miss Jimmy Novak. Ah well..." With a resigned expression he carefully drags his next offering into the adjoining room.
