Leona Fortunus was sitting on the Hogwarts Express once again, going to the place she called home. She loved the way the staircases changed, she loved the way the portraits moved, she loved the way the corridors wound. Each time she became lost, she found a new hallway. Each time she took a wrong turning, it was like a whole new adventure. For her - Hogwarts was her home.
She sighed, this year would be difficult with all the extra homework and prefect duties. However, there was no point worrying heself, she was getting ready for another great year. She was walking through the corridor, trying to find a compartment before bumping into a familiar face, it was Ginny.
"Hello! How are you?" Ginny asked. Leona was not very outgoing with strangers or new friends but Ginny was different matter. They were good friends and she found it easy to talk to her.
She replied, "I'm good! You?"
Ginny spoke again, "I'm fine, how were your holidays?"
"Oh, I have so much to tell you! Yours?"
"It was fine! Were you just trying to find our compartment?"
"Oh, you know me so well." They laughed and Leona followed her. Once she got to the compartment, she took in all the smiling faces. She was friends with them and knew them because they were in the same year. Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville. She easily slipped into a conversation with them all, she was only shy with new people or when she wanted to avoid a fight.
"We had better get changed. We're not that far away." said Hermione after a while. Ginny and Leona followed her to a place where they could change. But they didn't get far when they bumped into someone. Or rather some people.
There were three boys, one of which had bright blond hair and icy grey eyes. They were just about to walk past when he knocked into Leona, making her drop her things - money, clothes and books.
Ginny whipped around, wand drawn, "Watch it, Draco!" she yelled.
"Whoa! I'm sure he didn't mean it." exclaimed Leona, pushing Ginny's wand down. She had no idea what made her say it but she was sure that nobody would do that on purpose. She expected him to smile at her but instead he glared.
"I don't need help from the likes of you."
She felt anger rear up inside of her, "The likes of me? What's that supposed to mean?"
"I saw your muggle money, a muggle-born are you?" he glared at her, icy eyes boring into hers, that made her want to look away and usually she would have. However, there was something about him -his confidence, his sneer- that made her want to fight.
"So what if I am?" she said, shooting daggers at him.
Draco looked disgusted, "I can't believe I am having a conversation with you."
"Fine, next time I won't bother." she said coolly before speaking to Ginny, "You can hex him if you want, doesn't bother me. He probably thinks he is so 'great' that he won't feel it." she said angrily before storming off to where she could change.
The rest of the journey was more peaceful and when they arrived, Leona smiled at the sight of Hogwarts in front of her. With all its turrets and towers standing high over the grounds and lake. She had calmed down and sat at the Gryffindor table with her friends.
It was a normal feast, which means it was amazingly tasty. It had everything imaginable: roast chicken and sausages to potatoes and chips to chocolate fudge cake and treacle tart. When they had finally finished they sat back to listen for what Professor Dumbledore had to say. But there were sudden whisperings and soon Leona knew why. Dumbledore's hand was blackened, like it had been burnt and didn't look painful, it looked eerily dead.
There was nothing special announced so they all trailed to the common room, That was apart from the prefects. They were given timetables and it turned out that it would be one prefect from each house.
Leona was devastated to find out that Draco Malfoy would be on duty with her. There were four of them and they had to split into to two's. Things went from bad to worse when it turned out that the other two prefects didn't want to go with Draco either. They mumbled something quickly and before Leona knew what was happening, her and Draco were alone.
"Great!" she muttered sarcastically.
"Let's just get this over with. As if I don't have better things to do that make sure snotty little children stay in bed." Leona stared at him incredulously.
"How in the world did you become a prefect?" it came out a bit more rude than she meant but she shrugged, it's not like she cared.
"None of your business!" they lapsed into silence, and Leona made no attempt to start a conversation. However it was not long before they started fighting again.
"Ouch! You just tripped me on purpose!" exclaimed Leona from the floor before getting up and dusting herself down, her knee paining.
"So? Who cares?"
"I care you arrogant little-"
"I wouldn't finish that." he smirked which made her scowl. She stopped limping and glared at him.
"And why not?" she demanded. He turned to face her with a nasty glint in his eye.
"My father wouldn't like me being insulted by a filthy Mudblood!" This did not have the desired effect. Instead of a glare or look of anger, her face was clouded by confusion.
"What is a Mudblood?" she asked.
Draco snorted, "Wow, you really are Muggle-born! Imagine not knowing that." he shook his head and walked off. Leona probably should have left it but instead she ran after him.
"Wait! What do you mean? What is it?" she kept pestering him until he finally turned around angrily.
"Ask Hermione!" he yelled.
Leona thought about it, "Well, it does make sense. I mean she is the smartest in our year." she muttered. Draco scowled to himself, she wasn't that smart!
Prefect duties ended and Leona walked away, not even bothering to say Goodbye. Too busy wondering what he was talking about. She entered the common room to see her friends sitting by the fire, so she went to join them. They were the only one's left in the cmmon room at this point and so they were being kind of quiet.
Leona still turned to Hermione, "Hermione, what is a Mudblood?" she had barely finished her question when Ron leapt up and pointed his wand at her. She jumped back and hit the wall with a whimper.
"Is that your idea of a joke?" shouted Ron. Hermione looked really upset and the others looked angry. What had she done?
"N-no, I don't know w-what it means. Draco called me one and I didn't understand! So he told me to ask Hermione, I thought this made sense since she is the smartest in our year!" she rushed to say so that she wouldn't get hexed. Ron's expression softened, along with everyone else's and Hermione looked sympathetic. "I'm judging by your reactions it's bad." she said slowly.
They explained what it meant and once Leona realized what it really meant, she had tears in her eyes.
"Oh. That's what it means, it's an insult." she said shortly before rushing off to bed. She had no idea she would be hated because of her blood status, it had never happened before. Everyone had been looking at her with sympathy which she knew was nice of them but she just wanted to be alone.
As she settled down to sleep, she wondered how someone who didn't even know her could hate her as much as Draco already did.
