"My mission is to save a man called James Buchanan Barnes, and, no matter what the cost, bring him back home."

Captured, tortured, and experimented on, the horrors of war were all Kathy knew from a very young age, even before the II World War had started. At age eleven she had been diagnosed with an acute and incurable weakness of the bones. They crumbled without warning and broke easily. It was painful and there was nothing the doctors could do to make her life easier but put her in a wheelchair and tell her to avoid strenuous exercise.

When she was sixteen, in a desperate attempt to stop her suffering her parents took her to a research centre, remote and unheard of, but it was all the hope they had left. How they knew of the place, Kathy never found out, for only a week after their arrival her parents both committed suicide, plunging to their deaths from the top of the highest mountain.

After that she was in the hands of the scientists. Her life became an endless and repetitive circle. Every day she was wheeled from her room and brought into a laboratory where their only purpose seemed to be to hurt her. They said they were trying to cure her, but after almost a month she stopped believing them.

Escape was futile. She was weak and her bones too brittle for her to attempt to fight against her captors. She was forced to watch her life pass her by, a lab rat to the research centre she didn't even know the name of.

By the time she was twenty one she could barely remember what her life had been like before she became an orphan. The only thing she could cling onto were her parents names as their faces slowly melted from her memory. She spent her days in agony, whether it was caused naturally by her body or by the scientists, and her nights were somehow even worse.

But then, one day, a new scientist appeared, and he had a new idea, one that would change her life forever. He wanted to replace her bones with metal, or at least graft metal around her bones to hold them in place.

It was a brilliant idea, but things didn't go as planned. Halfway through the procedure something malfunctioned and half of the skin on her face was melted away. How she survived was a mystery, but she did, and when she woke up they had mended the damage. Her right eye, and all the way up to her hairline was made up of intricate cogs, a weave of machinery so fine it was hard to comprehend with the human brain.
