Steven Hyde always knew he cared about Lucy Forman. Even with their elementary school rivalry, when some boy destroyed her painting — but she stood still with clenched fists and looked like she was ready to swing — little Steven Hyde would step in to defend her painting (although it was really because Eric enacted Twin Code in his place in exchange for Twinkies). Plus, it was always more believable that he would be fighting at school than teacher's pet Lucy.

Now in elementary school, the punishments were never anything too bad. And the fights that needed to be settled for Lucy were far and few between. But, in high school, that was a different story.

It was halfway through freshman year in 1975, the boys sat in the cafeteria at the table, Kelso and Hyde bugging Eric to ask Laurie for beer for the weekend. "I'd rather not talk to the she-devil," Eric sighed before seeing Donna and Lucy walk through the cafeteria with their trays and waved them over. The girls were two tables away when Hyde saw Lucy sigh before facing the cheerleaders and jocks.

Eric and Hyde shared a quizzical look but couldn't hear anything until Sam Powell's booming voice was heard. "So like, is whoring around genetic? Because I mean, you would know."

At this, it seemed the entire cafeteria had quieted down. Donna's eyes widened, and Lucy shot a glance to the table full of senior girls were Laurie sat — and a glimpse of pain registered on her sister's face before she shrugged and waved Lucy off to leave it.

The boys all looked on worriedly before Lucy sneered, "I don't know Sam, but you would know if your small manhood was genetic right? Because according to Pam Macy, your situation is real unfortunate," she turned to walk away and faced the boys as she rolled eyes in a whatcha gonna do matter. Hyde shook his head in disbelief with a chuckle before a smack was heard throughout the cafeteria. Lucy's face went from shock as she jumped a foot in the air and then beet red in embarrassment and anger.

"Nah, her sister's ass is better, so I guess it's couldn't be genetic even if she tried," Sam laughed obnoxiously with the rest of the table.

And as soon as the words left his mouth, Hyde was pulling him off the table and wrestling him on the ground. Food trays were quickly forgotten as the entire gang pried him away and the jocks pulled Sam up. Donna and Lucy acting as a barricade as they stood in front of the boys.

Eric, fidgeting with anger looked over Hyde's shoulder, which he gripped firmly to hold him back and looked to his twin, "Are you alright?"

The blonde nodded, "I'm fine," she huffed, nodding to Donna and Kelso and finally looking to Hyde. His breathing was ragged but nearly stopped when she looked at him. She had a glint of mischief in her eyes and a cool collected look on her face. And all he could think was crap. And that was it for Steven Hyde.

And just like that, she spun on her heel, sending a swift punch to Sam's eye before kneeing him in the groin. She grabbed him by the ear and held him up, "For me and my sister. Maybe my ass isn't genetic, but my daddy was in Vietnam, and he'd be damned if sneak attacks weren't second nature."

Teachers and staff were quickly swarming the circle, and Lucy and Hyde and Sam and the jocks got dragged into separate offices. The blonde walked away with a victorious grin on her face and Hyde with a awestruck look at the girl beside him.

The two sat outside the principal's office while Sam and the jocks talked with him. The two sat identically, slumped in their seats; Hyde nursing an ice pack to his cheek, his glasses hanging on his shirt; Lucy with her arms crossed and a sigh, her hair a disarray, and her knuckles slightly swollen.

"Here," Hyde mumbled, passing her the ice pack.

She shook her head, "Don't need it," before shoving his hand back up to his cheek. "You shouldn't have done that, though. I could've handled it myself."

Hyde nodded, "Clearly. That was a hell of a punch."

Lucy turned her head to look at him with a proud smile, "I know."

And there was that look again, he didn't know exactly what he was feeling — he rationalized it as pride in his friend — just his friend. But a part of him knew that the small blonde before him would wreck his life if she kept giving him that look — but he knew he probably wouldn't mind.

Lucy Forman has and always will be stubborn as hell. So it took a little bit longer for her to fall for Steven Hyde. Mainly because she was convinced that he was the last person she'd ever even have a crush on. But she wasn't dumb enough to ignore that they're dynamic was weird — it had definitely transformed into a love-hate thing, but she rationalized that she surely had the same relationship with Kelso and even Eric. So Steven was just like a brother.

She could tell their relationship changed after the altercation with the quarterback. After that, he had a newfound respect for her and his teasing was much more lighthearted. With that change of character, her own feelings towards him softened. So her feelings were a gradual change. But if she had to place a day on what it was that happened, it would have to be sometime in 1976, probably in the basement after arguing with Eric to go get beers for the basement. Kelso was probably being perverted and Steven must've punched him — the nights in the basement all blend together so she couldn't say for sure.

But after she kicked Kelso and he received a punch from Hyde, the young blonde looked up at the boy she was laying across. And she realized, she definitely didn't look at Eric that way — and if she did her parents should send her to therapy.

And later that night, the rest of the gang had started to head over to The Hub, and Lucy had run up to grab some cash. When she came scurrying back downstairs she saw Hyde leaning against the frame of the front door.

"You coming LSD?" Hyde said teasingly, nodded out the door.

And it was the way he said it. Him saying it with that goddamn smirk, at risk of sounding completely cheesy, it sounded like music. So that was when she knew, one way or another, Steven Hyde was going to make her life hell. But there was some excitement behind that. And that's when their story truly begins.
