“So, what are we having?” I asked Jess, sitting on a chair at the breakfast bar.
“Hmmm.” She mused, pulling out packets of chips and TimTams and chocolate. She grabbed a bowl from the cupboard and emptied the chips into it. “Well, I don’t know what the rest of you are having, but I’m all set!” she declared, grabbing it all and marching into the living room.
“Jess!” Cami laughed as we followed her. “We’re hungry too!”
“Well… since I’m feeling lenient today, you may share in my bounty if you beat me.”
“Beat you at what?” Lissa asked suspiciously.
“A staring competition.” Jess announced dramatically. “Who among you is brave enough to accept my challenge?”
“I’ll try!” Ashleigh laughed, stepping forwards. “What are the rules?”
“You may use any method other than physical contact to get the other person to blink. If you can last longer than me, or longer than two full minutes, you may help me eat my treasure trove. If you look away, you forfeit. If you blink, you lose. Any questions?”
“You lose!” Ashleigh laughed.
“What?” Jess cried. “We haven’t started yet!”
“I don’t know about you, but I started as soon as I announced I was going for it! And you blinked. So… hand over the cookies and no one will get hurt.” Ashleigh said triumphantly.
“Fine.” Jess sighed, tossing her a bag of choc chip cookies. “Who’s next?”
“That would be me!” Lissa stepped forwards, raising her chin. “Ready, set, go!”
The time ticked by. Lissa joined Jess and Ashleigh, Cami joined Lissa, Jack earned his place at the food table.
“Which mere mortal will be next to attempt?” Jess asked through a mouthful of chocolate.
“Well, since I’m the only one left, I’ll give it a go.”
“Come on, Jas, it’s not that hard!” Lissa said.
“It took you five tries!” I cried.
“Well, if you want to look at it like that… you’re going hungry, my friend.”
“Go!” Ashleigh yelled through a mouthful of chocolate.
I leaned forwards, not breaking eye contact, and picked up a single chip. I stuck it in my mouth, and crunched it into pieces. Jess picked up a Timtam and sucked all the chocolate off it. I picked up another chip, and using my front teeth, I gnawed my way through it like a beaver, with a completely straight face. Bits of chip flew, and Jess collapsed into helpless laughter.
“Ah-hah!” I cried. “I am triumphant! Now hand over the goodies. I’m starving.”
“So, Ashleigh. Who’s in your cabin?” Cami asked, as we lounged around finishing the last of our morning tea.
“Some chick called Lilith, B1 and B2.” Ashleigh said, then clapped a hand over her mouth and blushed as we laughed. “Didn’t mean to say that out loud. Oops.”
“B1 and B2? Perfect description of them. Interchangable, identical, and brainless.” Jess patted Ashleigh’s knee. “Don’t worry, you’re secret’s safe with us.”
“And if you ever need a place to crash, you know, when they’re being, ummm… bitches, come over here.” I announced. “We’ll just kick Jess out of her room, and you can have it!”
“Hey!” she protested loudly. “Where am I going to sleep?”
“Well, they say that a girl can learn a lot by studying the stars…” I mused.
“You wouldn’t!” she gasped.
“Of course not!” I said innocently, placing a hand over my heart and looking at her with wide eyes. “I’d get Cami to do it for me!”
She poked her tongue out at me, then turned back to Ashleigh. “But if you ever need us, we’re here for you. Honestly, she’s beneath me, but just for you, I’d make her wish she was never born.”
“Er, thanks for the offer, but I really don’t think violence is the answer.” Ashleigh said.
“Who said anything about violence?” Jess asked, a little too innocently. “I would never lay a finger on her. I’m far too creative for that. If I can’t break her without violence, I’m losing my touch.” Ashleigh laughed, but something in Jess’s eyes said she was dead serious.
“Okey dokey! We have two minutes to be at out next lesson!” Jack declared.
“ABANDON SHIP!” Lissa hollered, running for her room.
“What does everyone have now?” Ashleigh asked.
“Well, me and Lissa and Jess have Textiles, and Jack and Jasmyn have swimming.” Cami announced.
“Oh good. I was hoping to see some friendly faces at one of my activities.” Ashleigh said with a sigh of relief. “I’ve got swimming now too!”
“Great! If you wait a minute, I’ll come with you to get your stuff.” I offered. She nodded brightly, as if having someone with her when she went to her cabin took a weight off her shoulders. She was really nervous about B1 and B2. Hopefully Jess could do something about them, and soon.
